SUMMARY:Alan Turing's Manchester - Lunchtime Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This LGBT history month\, join Jonathan Swinton\, author of “Alan Turing’s Manchester\,” in discovering the world of this icon of science whose discoveries helped defeat the Nazi’s in World War 2\, who became a symbol of the tragic fate the law had in store for many LGBT members of society throughout our history. \nFor Ticket Only click here: £3 \nFor Book and Ticket click here: £20 \nAbout the book \nManchester is proud of Alan Turing- but does it deserve to be? Alan Turing’s Manchester book explores the complexity of the city that Alan Turing encountered in 1948. It’s about much more than Turing as a mathematician: covering wire-women\, Wittgenstein and the daisy. This book takes you across the city of Manchester\, from Hale to Moston\, via the Festival of Britain and the seminar rooms and pick-up sites of the Oxford Road. It is a richly illustrated account of lives lived — and one life ended tragically early — in a post-war Manchester busy creating the computer. \nAbout the author \nJonathan did a maths PhD long ago\, and has spent many years trying to put some mathematics into biology. He came to Manchester in 2002\, and is proud of his adopted city. He’s been writing and talking about Alan Turing for years – he even did stand-up comedy once – but this is his first full length book. It is mathematically true that he is better at writing than he is at stand-up. \n
