DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to announce that Gemma Fairclough will be joining us to discuss her debut novel Bear Season\, published by Wild Hunt Books! In conversation with writer and poet Rosie Garland\, Gemma will be chatting about her addictive mystery novel\, the writing process\, and working with new independent publisher\, Wild Hunt. A Manchester-based author\, this is a great literary event for those who love tense\, thoughtful mysteries! \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket for £9.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only for £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. She was scheduled to speak at an academic symposium but never turned up. What was Jade really doing in Alaska? \nBlood is found in the woods and suspicion immediately falls on the reclusive survivalist Ursula Smith. She is swiftly arrested and convicted of Jade’s murder – even though a body has not been found. \nSeveral years later\, Jade’s doctoral thesis leaks online\, fuelling rumour and conspiracy over the true nature of her disappearance\, leading investigative journalist Carla Young to dig through Jade’s life and discover what did happen to Jade Hunter. \nClick here to read an exclusive excerpt of Bear Season! \nAbout the author \nGemma Fairclough is a writer living in Manchester. She has a BA (Hons) in English Literature and a Master’s in Contemporary Literature and Culture from the University of Manchester. She recently completed the Write Like a Grrrl programme and formed a writing group with peers from the course. A range of unsettling influences\, including horror films\, surrealist art\, and folklore inspire her writing\, which frequently centres upon experiences of alienation\, grief\, and aberrant desire. You can read a sample of her short fiction online: ‘Please Make Sure You Take All Your Personal Belongings With You’ (Dear Damsels)\, a story about an office worker with a fetish for automated female voices and ‘Elemental’ (Mookychick)\, a story about witchcraft and the power of belief. \nAbout Wild Hunt Books \nAn independent book publisher focusing on new and emerging authors\, alongside established authors in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Their mission is to foster strong and distinct literary voices and those that experiment with narrative\, plot and structure. They are also a home for authors dabbling in the darker genres and liminal spaces. You can find out more about Wild Hunt here. \nAbout Rosie Garland \nTagged ‘literary hero’ by The Skinny\, Rosie writes long and short-form fiction\, poetry and sings with post-punk band The March Violets. She also performs twisted cabaret as Rosie Lugosi the Vampire Queen. With a passion for language nurtured by libraries\, she started out in spoken word\, garnering praise from Apples and Snakes as ‘one of the country’s finest performance poets’.
