SUMMARY:Reclaiming The Future: An evening with Simon Hannah
DESCRIPTION:House of Books and Friends are delighted to host Simon Hannah to talk about his new book\, Reclaiming The Future: A Beginners Guide to Planning the Economy. The evening will start at 6pm and will consist of a discussion\, a Q&A\, plus the chance to get your books signed by Simon. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket – £16.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only – £5 \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the Book \nIn a world gripped by endless crisis and climate breakdown\, the demand to reshape our economic system has never been more urgent. Reclaiming the Future by Simon Hannah is a beginner’s guide to planning the economy\, taking readers on a transformative journey towards a radically democratic society\, where the power and control over our lives are firmly in our hands. \nDecades of right-wing scaremongering has tried to consign economic planning to the dustbin\, but the need for it is greater than ever – it might be the only thing that can save us from climate catastrophe. In this myth-busting and accessible guide\, Hannah lays the building blocks for a grassroots economy that aligns our economy within human needs and environmental limits. \nAbout the Author \nSimon Hannah is a writer\, activist\, and trade unionist living in South London. He is an assistant branch secretary in UNISON and has written several books\, including A Party With Socialists In It: A History of the Labour Left\, which was a Guardian Book of the Day.

SUMMARY:In conversation: Alex Bollen\, "Motherdom: Breaking Free from Bad Science and Good Mother Myths"
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are excited to be hosting yourself and Alex Bollen on Tuesday 11th March from 6pm – 7pm to discuss her book\, Motherdom. \n\nThere will be a discussion with Alex\, a chance for a Q&A\, and an opportunity to get your books signed. We will also be selling copies of the authors works on the night. \nTickets \nYou can purchase a ticket-only option\, or you can purchase a copy of the book from us to act as a ticket; see options below: \n£5 Ticket only available here \n£22 for Motherdom to act as your ticket here \nAbout the book: \nBlaming\, shaming and flimsy evidence: welcome to the ugly world of Good Mother myths \nWhen Alex Bollen had her first baby\, the fear of being a bad mother made her guilty and anxious. A researcher with twenty years’ experience\, she went looking for answers. To her surprise the studies she looked at were exaggerated and misrepresented in the media\, forming the foundation for what she calls Good Mother myths. These myths are an assortment of narratives\, ideologies and stereotypes\, deployed to censure mothers and blame them for every societal ill. \nIncensed by the way bad science is used to shame mothers\, Alex Bollen decided to set the record straight. With meticulous research and keen insight\, Motherdom exposes both the shaky science and unjustified prescriptions about how mothers should ‘naturally’ behave. Competing visions of birth – ‘natural’ versus ‘medical’ – mean women can be criticised whatever happens\, raising the odds that birth will be a damaging\, even deadly\, experience. Mothers are judged and belittled whether they breast- or bottle-feed their babies. Bogus claims about brain development and dodgy attachment theories mean that whatever mothers do\, it is never enough. \nThis has to stop. We must replace Good Mother myths with a realistic approach to parenting. Alex Bollen proposes ‘motherdom’\, a more expansive conception of motherhood\, which values and respects the different ways people raise their children. Instead of finding fault with mothers\, Motherdom shifts our focus to the relationships and resources children need to flourish. \nAbout the author: \nAlex Bollen is a researcher with over twenty years of experience\, including as a former director of the research agency Ipsos MORI. She is a Postnatal Practitioner with the NCT\, the UK’s largest parenting charity\, and has been running postnatal groups for new mothers in South West London for over a decade. She is the mother of two children.

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER is for anyone who loved BAD GAYS\, NATIVES or POVERTY SAFARI and is hungry for a fresh perspective on our shared human history. \nAbout the author \nJake Hall is a freelance writer and author based in Sheffield. Yet each contains countless stories of tradition and belonging – be that a legacy of colonialism or persecution\, the desire to fit in\, or the complex cultural inheritance from one’s parents. \nIn What’s in a Name?\, Sheela Banerjee unravels the personal histories of friends and family through their names. And while tracing their heritage across centuries and continents – from west London to British India\, and from 1960s Jamaica to pre-Revolutionary Russia – Sheela also tells the story of twentieth-century immigration to the UK. \nAbout The Exiled: Empire\, immigration and Ugandan Asian \nAfter packing scant possessions and countless memories\, 50\,000 Ugandan Asians vied for limited space in countries including Canada\, India and the United Kingdom. More than 28\,000 expellees from Britain’s former colony arrived in the UK and began building new lives – but their incredible stories have\, until now\, remained largely hidden. \nFifty years on from the exodus\, The Exiled draws on first-hand interviews and testimonies\, including from the author’s family\, to illuminate a time of painful alienation and incredible courage. As an entire people stepped into the unknown\, a global diaspora was born\, and the fate of the United Kingdom changed forever.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Lecture: Thrillers and Psychopaths with Isabelle Kenyon
DESCRIPTION:We return with our Lunchtime Lectures this September\, and have the wonderful Isabelle Kenyon coming to talk on Friday 20th September about the UK’s fascination with thrillers and the literary psychopath. Not only is Isabelle a fan herself\, and a publisher of several titles of this genre including The Sleepless by Liam Bell\, but also an author of a thriller novel\, The Dark Within Them.  \nFor many\, books are used as a form of escapism. Why then\, are we drawn to the darker sides of reality? What is it as a reader makes us want to explore the terror and misery that can come from the actions of those we deem ‘psychopaths’? Isabelle will talk us through where the genre began\, what lead to the growth in the market\, and what makes a really good scary novel. \nThe talk will begin at 1pm and last for 1 hour. Tickets are £3\, and are available to buy here. \nAs always we have a handful of free tickets for those who would like them. Please email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com to claim these.

SUMMARY:Evie Muir in conversation with L'Oréal Blackett: Radical Rest
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome Evie Muir to discuss their new book Radical Rest with L’Oréal Blackett on Tuesday\, 17th September! Radical Rest: Notes on burnout\, healing and hopeful futures is Evie’s first book which explores what radical rest would look and feel like\, through a Black Feminist\, abolitionist and nature-allied lens. Speaking to those who have been disproportionately affected by burnout\, Muir gives us hope that we can experience a healed future. This event will include a discussion between Evie and L’Oréal\, an audience Q&A\, and a chance to get your book signed. \nTickets \n£5 Ticket only (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening of the event)\n£16.99 Book and Ticket (available to collect on the evening of the event) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nWe’re burnt out. Exhausted; anxiety-ridden; over-worked and under-resourced. Yet the ‘solution’ cannot possibly lie in self-care\, yoga retreats or the odd massage when this bone-numbing fatigue is a symptom of a desperately unhealthy society. We cannot simply ‘fix ourselves’ under a system that demands and takes so much of us. What is needed is a complete reimagining that puts a thriving life of abundance first and foremost. \nThrough a Black Feminist\, abolitionist and nature-allied lens\, Evie Muir takes us on a journey of regeneration that reimagines what a world of true rest – radical rest – would look like\, how that would feel. As they look to activists and cultural influences past and present for guidance\, Evie explores the core emotions associated with burnout: moving from rage\, grief and anxiety to the hope\, joy and plenty that deep change can bring. \nAlong the way\, Evie speaks with those who have been disproportionately impacted by\, and working in resistance to\, burnout – Black\, queer\, disabled activists of colour. And what becomes clear as we hear about these lived experiences is that a world of radical rest must exist in community – with one another\, with our bodies\, and with the natural world. \nBold\, vulnerable and deeply honest\, Radical Rest is a blueprint for change and a salve for the soul. Step in and open the door to a hopeful and healed future. \nAbout the author \nEvie Muir is both a domestic abuse survivor and qualified domestic abuse specialist\, writer and the founder of Peaks of Colour – a Peak District based nature-for-healing community group\, by and for people of colour. \nHaving worked in the VAWG sector for over 10 years\, specialising in Black and queer survivors’ intersectional experiences of gendered and racialised trauma\, she left the sector when she became burnt out\, disenfranchised and disillusioned. Her work now sits on the intersections of gendered\, racial and land justice\, and seeks to nurture survivors’ joy\, rest\, hope and imagination as abolitionist praxis. As a Northern freelance writer\, she’s passionate about the liberating form of writing as healing and resistance. \n \nAbout L’Oréal Blackett \nL’Oréal Blacket is a journalist\, magazine editor and broadcaster from Manchester. In her current role as Unbothered UK editor at Refinery29\, L’Oréal’s work celebrates the multifaceted lives of Black women and also fosters a platform for underrepresented voices.

The evening will involve a discussion\, Q&A and a chance to get your copy of Mancunians signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket for £11.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only for £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nIn the late 1990s\, Manchester was a city in upheaval. The devastation of the IRA bomb and the closure of the notorious Haçienda nightclub were seismic events that rocked the city’s confidence at a time when identikit bands were flooding its clubs and bars\, fueled on anthemic guitar rock and swagger. Stereotypes were everywhere\, while the spirit of Manchester was silently suffocating. Through a mixture of memoir and interviews with well-known Mancunians such as Guy Garvey\, Tunde Babalola\, Sylvia Tella\, Badly Drawn Boy and Stan Chow\, David Scott portrays the city at the turn of the century in a way never seen before.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Julia Hotz: The Connection Cure
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Julia Hotz to House of Books & Friends to discuss her new book\, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement\, Nature\, Art\, Service\, and Belonging. \nJulia will be in conversation with Bev Taylor. Following this\, there will be a Q&A session. Julia will also be hosting a 5-10 minute interactive audience exercise reflecting on different versions of the book’s central question “What matters to you?”\, and then connecting to local “medicine”. The evening will conclude with an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of The Connection Cure. \nThe event will take place between 6:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday\, 26th June\, in store. \nTickets\nBook and ticket: £16.99\nTicket only: £5 (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book  \nIn this combination of diligent science reporting\, moving patient success stories\, and surprising self-discovery\, journalist Julia Hotz helps us discover lasting and life-changing medicine in our own communities. \nTraditionally\, when we get sick\, health care professionals ask\, “What’s the matter with you?” But around the world\, teams of doctors\, nurses\, therapists\, and social workers have started to flip the script\, asking “What matters to you?” Instead of solely pharmaceutical prescriptions\, they offer ‘social prescriptions’-referrals to community activities and resources\, like photography classes\, gardening groups\, and volunteering gigs. The results speak for themselves. Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments-depression\, ADHD\, addiction\, trauma\, anxiety\, chronic pain\, dementia\, diabetes\, and loneliness. \nAs health care’s de facto cycle of “diagnose-treat-repeat” reaches a breaking point\, social prescribing has also proven to reduce patient wait times\, lower hospitalization rates\, save money\, and reverse health worker burnout. And as a general sense of unwellness plagues more of us\, social prescriptions can help us feel healthier than we’ve felt in years. As Hotz tours the globe to investigate the spread of social prescribing to over thirty countries\, she meets people personifying its revolutionary potential: an aspiring novelist whose art workshop helps her cope with trauma symptoms and rediscover her joy; a policy researcher whose swimming course helps her taper off antidepressants and feel excited to wake up in the morning; an army vet whose phone conversations help him form his only true friendship; and dozens more. \nThe success stories she finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment\, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us\, we can all start to feel better. \nAbout the author \nJulia Hotz is a solutions-focused journalist and author of THE CONNECTION CURE. After studying sociology at the University of Cambridge\, she joined the Solutions Journalism Network\, where she helps other journalists rigorously report on what’s working to solve today’s biggest problems. \nBefore becoming a journalist\, Julia worked as a teacher\, bartender\, pizza server\, and summer camp “forest ranger” (long story). She enjoys hiking up mountains\, riling up dance floors\, running around parks\, biking around New York\, budget traveling around the world\, and building the ‘longest road’ around Catan. \n \nAbout Bev Taylor \nBev Taylor set up the national social prescribing programme at NHS England between 2015-19\, before being seconded to set up the national academy for social prescribing. Bev has worked alongside Manchester Camerata since 2022\, helping to develop a Music Champions programme. Her new role will be to nurture a national music and dementia learning network\, as part of Camerata’s Centre of Excellence for music and dementia.

SUMMARY:Will Dean in conversation with Rob Parker: The Chamber
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome Will Dean\, to discuss his new book The Chamber\, with Rob Parker! After a sell-out event last year\, we’re so excited to have Will back to talk all things The Chamber – a high concept thriller set in a hyperbaric chamber on the North Sea. This event will take place at House of Books & Friends on Monday\, 10th June from 6-7pm\, and will include a discussion between Will and Rob\, an audience Q&A\, and an opportunity to get your books signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket – £20\nClick here to buy a ticket only (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) – £5 \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nHIGH PRESSURE OUTSIDE\nOn a boat heading out into the North Sea\, Ellen Brooke steels herself to spend almost a month locked inside a hyperbaric chamber with five other divers. They are all being paid handsomely for this work – to be lowered each day inside a diving bell to the sea bed\, taking it in turns to dive down and repair oil pipes that lie in the dark waters. It is a close knit team and it has to be: any error or loss of trust could be catastrophic. \nEXTREME PRESSURE INSIDE\nAll is going to plan until one of the divers is found unresponsive in his bunk. He hadn’t left the chamber. It will take four more days of decompression\, locked away together\, before the hatch can be opened. Four more days of bare steel\, intrusive thoughts\, and the constant struggle not to give way to panic. Mind games\, exhaustion\, suspicion\, and\, most of all\, pressure. And if someone does unlock the door\, everyone dies… \nAbout the author \nWill Dean grew up in the East Midlands and had lived in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying Law at the LSE and working in London\, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a house in a boggy clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest\, and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel\, Dark Pines\, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club\, shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize and named a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. Red Snow was published in January 2019 and won Best Independent Voice at the Amazon Publishing Readers’ Awards\, 2019. Black River was shortlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Award in 2021. The Last Thing to Burn was released to widespread acclaim in January 2021. First Born was published in 2022. \n \nAbout Rob Parker \nRob Parker is a married father of three\, who lives in Warrington\, UK. The author of the Ben Bracken thrillers\, Crook’s Hollow\, and the bestselling Audible Original Far From The Tree\, he enjoys a rural life on an old pig farm (now minus pigs)\, writing horrible things between school runs. \nRob writes full time\, attends various author events across the UK\, and boxes regularly for charity. He spends a lot of time in schools across the North\, encouraging literacy\, story-telling and creative-writing\, and somehow squeezes in time to co-host the For Your Reconsideration film podcast\, appear regularly on The Blood Brothers Crime Podcast\, and is a member of the Northern Crime Syndicate.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Kate Feld: Deeryard Launch
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are excited to celebrate the launch of Deeryard\, Kate Feld’s new pamphlet of prose poetry and photographs\, published by Manchester independent press Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers. Kate will be reading poems from the book and will be joined by her friends Mick Conley and Lydia Unsworth\, who will read some of their own poems. The readings will be followed by a book signing. \nTaking place on Thursday\, 23rd May from 6:30-8pm\, we cannot wait to host this night of poetry and prose! \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket \nAs always\, there are a handful of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly on 07597 365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout the book \nIn Deeryard\, a series of tenderly observed internal states\, natural settings and photographed landscapes serve to collapse the distance between the speaker and the world she inhabits. The poems are acts of orientation\, making their way through phenomenological inquiry toward a new sense of being at home in our lostness. \n“These prose poems are full of music: the sounds of a richly-evoked natural world where ‘something always has to be happening’\, and the sounds of language itself being wrung out for its harmonies. They are both experimental and beautiful\, highly-crafted and instinctive. In Kate Feld’s work\, a relationship with nature seems to be a relationship with the past and a reckoning with the self. If the places in these pieces are real\, then they are made imaginative by the inherent unreliability of memory and language; if they are imagined\, then they are made real by the quality of observation and sensory detail.” – Mick Conley \n“It is remarkable to be brought back into your life when the living of it requires a sort of packaging up and glossing over. Deeryard reclaims the friction. Image and text lead you through situations\, often of sound\, in which the slow accumulation of self-knowledge and the compulsions of non-human life become entangled and momentarily perceivable before slipping out of hand to resume their secret ongoing operations.” – Jenna Collins \nAbout the author \nKate Feld is a writer drawn to the cracks between established categories of form and genre. Her writing has appeared in literary journals including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Tolka and Hotel and in The Art of Being Dangerous: Exploring Women and Danger Through Creative Expression (Leuven University Press.) She founded creative nonfiction journal The Real Story in 2014 and teaches journalism at The University of Salford. A native of Vermont\, she has lived for many years in Manchester\, UK with her daughters. Deeryard is her first pamphlet. More of her writing can be found at katefeld.com.
