SUMMARY:Evie Muir in conversation with L'Oréal Blackett: Radical Rest
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome Evie Muir to discuss their new book Radical Rest with L’Oréal Blackett on Tuesday\, 17th September! Radical Rest: Notes on burnout\, healing and hopeful futures is Evie’s first book which explores what radical rest would look and feel like\, through a Black Feminist\, abolitionist and nature-allied lens. Speaking to those who have been disproportionately affected by burnout\, Muir gives us hope that we can experience a healed future. This event will include a discussion between Evie and L’Oréal\, an audience Q&A\, and a chance to get your book signed. \nTickets \n£5 Ticket only (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening of the event)\n£16.99 Book and Ticket (available to collect on the evening of the event) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nWe’re burnt out. Exhausted; anxiety-ridden; over-worked and under-resourced. Yet the ‘solution’ cannot possibly lie in self-care\, yoga retreats or the odd massage when this bone-numbing fatigue is a symptom of a desperately unhealthy society. We cannot simply ‘fix ourselves’ under a system that demands and takes so much of us. What is needed is a complete reimagining that puts a thriving life of abundance first and foremost. \nThrough a Black Feminist\, abolitionist and nature-allied lens\, Evie Muir takes us on a journey of regeneration that reimagines what a world of true rest – radical rest – would look like\, how that would feel. As they look to activists and cultural influences past and present for guidance\, Evie explores the core emotions associated with burnout: moving from rage\, grief and anxiety to the hope\, joy and plenty that deep change can bring. \nAlong the way\, Evie speaks with those who have been disproportionately impacted by\, and working in resistance to\, burnout – Black\, queer\, disabled activists of colour. And what becomes clear as we hear about these lived experiences is that a world of radical rest must exist in community – with one another\, with our bodies\, and with the natural world. \nBold\, vulnerable and deeply honest\, Radical Rest is a blueprint for change and a salve for the soul. Step in and open the door to a hopeful and healed future. \nAbout the author \nEvie Muir is both a domestic abuse survivor and qualified domestic abuse specialist\, writer and the founder of Peaks of Colour – a Peak District based nature-for-healing community group\, by and for people of colour. \nHaving worked in the VAWG sector for over 10 years\, specialising in Black and queer survivors’ intersectional experiences of gendered and racialised trauma\, she left the sector when she became burnt out\, disenfranchised and disillusioned. Her work now sits on the intersections of gendered\, racial and land justice\, and seeks to nurture survivors’ joy\, rest\, hope and imagination as abolitionist praxis. As a Northern freelance writer\, she’s passionate about the liberating form of writing as healing and resistance. \n \nAbout L’Oréal Blackett \nL’Oréal Blacket is a journalist\, magazine editor and broadcaster from Manchester. In her current role as Unbothered UK editor at Refinery29\, L’Oréal’s work celebrates the multifaceted lives of Black women and also fosters a platform for underrepresented voices.

SUMMARY:David Scott in conversation with Nooruddean Choudry: Mancunians
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce David Scott will be coming to House of Books & Friends on Wednesday 3rd July to discuss his book Mancunians: Where Do We Start\, Where Do I Begin? David will be in conversation with Nooruddean Choudry\, author of Inshallah United and Manchester United journalist and fanatic\, to discuss the side of Manchester that often gets underrepresented and overlooked: the musicians of colour\, the football fans alienated by rampant commercialism\, frustrated public figures\, optimistic developers and ambitious artists. The evening will involve a discussion\, Q&A and a chance to get your copy of Mancunians signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket for £11.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only for £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nIn the late 1990s\, Manchester was a city in upheaval. The devastation of the IRA bomb and the closure of the notorious Haçienda nightclub were seismic events that rocked the city’s confidence at a time when identikit bands were flooding its clubs and bars\, fueled on anthemic guitar rock and swagger. Stereotypes were everywhere\, while the spirit of Manchester was silently suffocating. Through a mixture of memoir and interviews with well-known Mancunians such as Guy Garvey\, Tunde Babalola\, Sylvia Tella\, Badly Drawn Boy and Stan Chow\, David Scott portrays the city at the turn of the century in a way never seen before.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Julia Hotz: The Connection Cure
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Julia Hotz to House of Books & Friends to discuss her new book\, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement\, Nature\, Art\, Service\, and Belonging. \nJulia will be in conversation with Bev Taylor. Following this\, there will be a Q&A session. Julia will also be hosting a 5-10 minute interactive audience exercise reflecting on different versions of the book’s central question “What matters to you?”\, and then connecting to local “medicine”. The evening will conclude with an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of The Connection Cure. \nThe event will take place between 6:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday\, 26th June\, in store. \nTickets\nBook and ticket: £16.99\nTicket only: £5 (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book  \nIn this combination of diligent science reporting\, moving patient success stories\, and surprising self-discovery\, journalist Julia Hotz helps us discover lasting and life-changing medicine in our own communities. \nTraditionally\, when we get sick\, health care professionals ask\, “What’s the matter with you?” But around the world\, teams of doctors\, nurses\, therapists\, and social workers have started to flip the script\, asking “What matters to you?” Instead of solely pharmaceutical prescriptions\, they offer ‘social prescriptions’-referrals to community activities and resources\, like photography classes\, gardening groups\, and volunteering gigs. The results speak for themselves. Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments-depression\, ADHD\, addiction\, trauma\, anxiety\, chronic pain\, dementia\, diabetes\, and loneliness. \nAs health care’s de facto cycle of “diagnose-treat-repeat” reaches a breaking point\, social prescribing has also proven to reduce patient wait times\, lower hospitalization rates\, save money\, and reverse health worker burnout. And as a general sense of unwellness plagues more of us\, social prescriptions can help us feel healthier than we’ve felt in years. As Hotz tours the globe to investigate the spread of social prescribing to over thirty countries\, she meets people personifying its revolutionary potential: an aspiring novelist whose art workshop helps her cope with trauma symptoms and rediscover her joy; a policy researcher whose swimming course helps her taper off antidepressants and feel excited to wake up in the morning; an army vet whose phone conversations help him form his only true friendship; and dozens more. \nThe success stories she finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment\, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us\, we can all start to feel better. \nAbout the author \nJulia Hotz is a solutions-focused journalist and author of THE CONNECTION CURE. After studying sociology at the University of Cambridge\, she joined the Solutions Journalism Network\, where she helps other journalists rigorously report on what’s working to solve today’s biggest problems. \nBefore becoming a journalist\, Julia worked as a teacher\, bartender\, pizza server\, and summer camp “forest ranger” (long story). She enjoys hiking up mountains\, riling up dance floors\, running around parks\, biking around New York\, budget traveling around the world\, and building the ‘longest road’ around Catan. \n \nAbout Bev Taylor \nBev Taylor set up the national social prescribing programme at NHS England between 2015-19\, before being seconded to set up the national academy for social prescribing. Bev has worked alongside Manchester Camerata since 2022\, helping to develop a Music Champions programme. Her new role will be to nurture a national music and dementia learning network\, as part of Camerata’s Centre of Excellence for music and dementia.

SUMMARY:Will Dean in conversation with Rob Parker: The Chamber
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome Will Dean\, to discuss his new book The Chamber\, with Rob Parker! After a sell-out event last year\, we’re so excited to have Will back to talk all things The Chamber – a high concept thriller set in a hyperbaric chamber on the North Sea. This event will take place at House of Books & Friends on Monday\, 10th June from 6-7pm\, and will include a discussion between Will and Rob\, an audience Q&A\, and an opportunity to get your books signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket – £20\nClick here to buy a ticket only (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) – £5 \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nHIGH PRESSURE OUTSIDE\nOn a boat heading out into the North Sea\, Ellen Brooke steels herself to spend almost a month locked inside a hyperbaric chamber with five other divers. They are all being paid handsomely for this work – to be lowered each day inside a diving bell to the sea bed\, taking it in turns to dive down and repair oil pipes that lie in the dark waters. It is a close knit team and it has to be: any error or loss of trust could be catastrophic. \nEXTREME PRESSURE INSIDE\nAll is going to plan until one of the divers is found unresponsive in his bunk. He hadn’t left the chamber. It will take four more days of decompression\, locked away together\, before the hatch can be opened. Four more days of bare steel\, intrusive thoughts\, and the constant struggle not to give way to panic. Mind games\, exhaustion\, suspicion\, and\, most of all\, pressure. And if someone does unlock the door\, everyone dies… \nAbout the author \nWill Dean grew up in the East Midlands and had lived in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying Law at the LSE and working in London\, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a house in a boggy clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest\, and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel\, Dark Pines\, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club\, shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize and named a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. Red Snow was published in January 2019 and won Best Independent Voice at the Amazon Publishing Readers’ Awards\, 2019. Black River was shortlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Award in 2021. The Last Thing to Burn was released to widespread acclaim in January 2021. First Born was published in 2022. \n \nAbout Rob Parker \nRob Parker is a married father of three\, who lives in Warrington\, UK. The author of the Ben Bracken thrillers\, Crook’s Hollow\, and the bestselling Audible Original Far From The Tree\, he enjoys a rural life on an old pig farm (now minus pigs)\, writing horrible things between school runs. \nRob writes full time\, attends various author events across the UK\, and boxes regularly for charity. He spends a lot of time in schools across the North\, encouraging literacy\, story-telling and creative-writing\, and somehow squeezes in time to co-host the For Your Reconsideration film podcast\, appear regularly on The Blood Brothers Crime Podcast\, and is a member of the Northern Crime Syndicate.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Kate Feld: Deeryard Launch
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are excited to celebrate the launch of Deeryard\, Kate Feld’s new pamphlet of prose poetry and photographs\, published by Manchester independent press Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers. Kate will be reading poems from the book and will be joined by her friends Mick Conley and Lydia Unsworth\, who will read some of their own poems. The readings will be followed by a book signing. \nTaking place on Thursday\, 23rd May from 6:30-8pm\, we cannot wait to host this night of poetry and prose! \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket \nAs always\, there are a handful of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly on 07597 365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout the book \nIn Deeryard\, a series of tenderly observed internal states\, natural settings and photographed landscapes serve to collapse the distance between the speaker and the world she inhabits. The poems are acts of orientation\, making their way through phenomenological inquiry toward a new sense of being at home in our lostness. \n“These prose poems are full of music: the sounds of a richly-evoked natural world where ‘something always has to be happening’\, and the sounds of language itself being wrung out for its harmonies. They are both experimental and beautiful\, highly-crafted and instinctive. In Kate Feld’s work\, a relationship with nature seems to be a relationship with the past and a reckoning with the self. If the places in these pieces are real\, then they are made imaginative by the inherent unreliability of memory and language; if they are imagined\, then they are made real by the quality of observation and sensory detail.” – Mick Conley \n“It is remarkable to be brought back into your life when the living of it requires a sort of packaging up and glossing over. Deeryard reclaims the friction. Image and text lead you through situations\, often of sound\, in which the slow accumulation of self-knowledge and the compulsions of non-human life become entangled and momentarily perceivable before slipping out of hand to resume their secret ongoing operations.” – Jenna Collins \nAbout the author \nKate Feld is a writer drawn to the cracks between established categories of form and genre. Her writing has appeared in literary journals including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Tolka and Hotel and in The Art of Being Dangerous: Exploring Women and Danger Through Creative Expression (Leuven University Press.) She founded creative nonfiction journal The Real Story in 2014 and teaches journalism at The University of Salford. A native of Vermont\, she has lived for many years in Manchester\, UK with her daughters. Deeryard is her first pamphlet. More of her writing can be found at katefeld.com.

She was scheduled to speak at an academic symposium but never turned up. What was Jade really doing in Alaska? \nBlood is found in the woods and suspicion immediately falls on the reclusive survivalist Ursula Smith. She is swiftly arrested and convicted of Jade’s murder – even though a body has not been found. \nSeveral years later\, Jade’s doctoral thesis leaks online\, fuelling rumour and conspiracy over the true nature of her disappearance\, leading investigative journalist Carla Young to dig through Jade’s life and discover what did happen to Jade Hunter. \nClick here to read an exclusive excerpt of Bear Season! \nAbout the author \nGemma Fairclough is a writer living in Manchester. She has a BA (Hons) in English Literature and a Master’s in Contemporary Literature and Culture from the University of Manchester. She recently completed the Write Like a Grrrl programme and formed a writing group with peers from the course. A range of unsettling influences\, including horror films\, surrealist art\, and folklore inspire her writing\, which frequently centres upon experiences of alienation\, grief\, and aberrant desire. You can read a sample of her short fiction online: ‘Please Make Sure You Take All Your Personal Belongings With You’ (Dear Damsels)\, a story about an office worker with a fetish for automated female voices and ‘Elemental’ (Mookychick)\, a story about witchcraft and the power of belief. \nAbout Wild Hunt Books \nAn independent book publisher focusing on new and emerging authors\, alongside established authors in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Their mission is to foster strong and distinct literary voices and those that experiment with narrative\, plot and structure. They are also a home for authors dabbling in the darker genres and liminal spaces. You can find out more about Wild Hunt here. \nAbout Rosie Garland \nTagged ‘literary hero’ by The Skinny\, Rosie writes long and short-form fiction\, poetry and sings with post-punk band The March Violets. She also performs twisted cabaret as Rosie Lugosi the Vampire Queen. With a passion for language nurtured by libraries\, she started out in spoken word\, garnering praise from Apples and Snakes as ‘one of the country’s finest performance poets’.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Dr Benjamin Linley Wild: 'Hang Ups' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends is excited to announce that we will be hosting the book launch for Dr Benjamin Linley Wild’s new title\, Hang-Ups: Reflections on the Causes and Consequences of Fashion’s ‘Western’-Centrism. The event will take place from 6pm – 8pm on Wednesday 13th March\, and will involve the chance to chat with Benjamin about his work. \nTickets\nTicket and book: £27.99\nTicket only: £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a number of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout Hang Ups \nThe Covid-19 pandemic heightened people’s awareness of long-standing inequalities within the fashion industry. Amid calls for greater accountability and ethical awareness\, efforts are being made within and beyond the industry\, chiefly in the cultural and education sectors\, to decentralize fashion: to make the conception\, creation and consumption of fashionable dress and appearance less ‘western’-centric. \nSupporting this premise\, Hang-Ups argues that purposeful and permanent change within the fashion industry and fashion education is more likely if it is understood how the contemporary industry became ‘western’-centric. To institute effective change\, it is necessary to revert to first principles and understand how the fashion industry developed into what it is today. \nDuring a period when the concepts of fashion\, history and culture are being intensely scrutinized\, and with suggestions they are reaching their nadir\, the imperative to understand the extent to which they relate\, and facilitate the presentation of people’s fashionable bodies\, is urgent. Hang-Ups explores the origins and consequences of the fashion industry’s ‘western’-centrism by focusing on nine binaries\, defined in the crucible of empire\, that continue to be sites of negotiation as the ‘west’s’ traditions and ideals are contested by different cultural perspectives and changing global realities. \nAbout Dr Benjamin Linley Wild \nBenjamin Linley Wild is Senior Lecturer in Fashion Narratives at Manchester Fashion Institute\, Manchester Metropolitan University\, UK. His work is underpinned by a belief that history has a dynamic role within people’s lives\, informing their values and behaviours. He has published widely about fashion and material culture\, including Carnival to Catwalk (2020). \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Eliza Chan: Fathomfolk Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are overjoyed to announce we are hosting Eliza Chan for the launch of her debut novel\, Fathomfolk. The event will take place from 6pm – 8pm and will include drinks\, a goodie bag\, and a chance to get your hands on an early copy of the book – official launch date 29th February! \nTickets\nTicket and book: £18.99\nTicket only: £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nTicket numbers are very limited for this event\, so book early to avoid disappointment. As always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout Fathomfolk \nWelcome to Tiankawi – shining pearl of human civilization and a safe haven for those fleeing civil unrest. Or at least\, that’s how it first appears. But in the semi-flooded city\, humans are\, quite literally\, on top: peering down from shining towers and aerial walkways on the fathomfolk – sirens\, seawitches\, kelpies and kappas – who live in the polluted waters below. \nFor half-siren Mira\, promotion to captain of the border guard means an opportunity to help her downtrodden people. But if earning the trust and respect of her human colleagues wasn’t hard enough\, everything Mira has worked towards is put in jeopardy when Nami\, a know-it-all water dragon – fathomfolk royalty – is exiled to the city. When extremists sabotage the annual boat race\, violence erupts\, as does the clampdown on fathomfolk rights. Both Nami and Mira must decide if the cost of change is worth it\, or\, if Tiankawi should be left to drown. \nAbout Eliza Chan \nEliza Chan is a Scottish-born speculative fiction author who writes about East Asian mythology\, British folklore and reclaiming the dragon lady. Her short fiction has been published in The Dark\, Podcastle\, Fantasy Magazine and The Best of British Fantasy. Her debut novel FATHOMFOLK — inspired by mythology\, ESEAN cities and diaspora feels — will be published by Orbit in Spring 2024. \nShe has been a medical school drop-out\, a kilt shop assistant\, an English teacher and a speech and language therapist\, but currently she spends her time tabletop gaming\, cosplaying\, crafting and toddler wrangling.

He is founding editor of harana poetry\, the online magazine for poets writing in English as a second or parallel language. Inspired by queer ecologies\, entomology\, sex and spirituality\, the poems investigate Walker’s belief that non-human nature is inherently queer.

SUMMARY:An Evening with C. D. Rose: Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome C. D. Rose to discuss his new short story collection\, Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea\, with Dr. Keith Crome. This is a stunning collection of 15 short\, dreamlike stories about memory\, illusion and language from the author of The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure\, Who’s Who When Everyone Is Someone Else\, and most recently The Blind Accordionist. This event is perfect for fans of short stories and literary fiction alike! \nTickets\nTicket and book: £17.99\nTicket only: £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea \nWelcome to the fictional universe of C. D. Rose\, whose stories seem to be set in some unidentifiable but vaguely Mitteleuropean nation\, and likewise have an uncanny sense of timelessness—the time could be some cobblestoned Victorian past era\, or the present\, or even the future. In these 15 dreamlike tales\, you’ll meet a forgotten composer who enters a nostalgic dream-world while marking time in a decaying Romanian seaport; two Russian brothers\, one blind and one deaf\, building an intricate model town during an interminable train ride across the steppe; a journalist whose interview with an artist turns into a dizzying roundelay of memory and image. Ghosts of the past mingle with the quiddities of modernity in a bewitching stew where lost masterpieces surface with translations in an invisible language; where image and photograph become mystically entwined\, and where the very nature of reality takes on a shimmering sense of possibility and illusion. \nAbout the Author \nC. D. Rose is an award-winning short-story writer\, and the author of the novels The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure and Who’s Who When Everyone Is Someone Else\, as well as the story collection The Blind Accordionist. He lives in Hebden Bridge.

SUMMARY:*SOLD OUT* Autism in Women and Girls: How It Presents Differently - Autistic Gals
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are proud to present Autism in Women and Girls: How it Presents Differently\, a talk from Sarah Jane Nuttall\, PhD research student. This event will include a presentation and Q&A. \nTickets are £3 and are available to buy here. There are complimentary tickets available for anyone who needs one – please contact us directly on bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nSarah Jane Nuttall is an autistic woman who is researching autism in women\, looking at its presentation\, and the limitations of current diagnostic criteria and screening tools. She is also writing a novel to help women to identify their autistic traits. \nAutism is underdiagnosed in women and girls. They are also more likely to be misdiagnosed and receive a late diagnosis. Women of colour and anyone who is not a straight cis white male are also less likely to get a diagnosis. There is a need to spread the word on how autism presents differently in women and girls. Recognising autistic traits in females is more difficult\, as is getting a diagnosis\, both of which argue for a female phenotype. Pre and post diagnosis support are practically non-existent. \nThis presentation is for anyone identifying as a woman who has ever wondered whether they are autistic\, and for friends\, family\, partners and the general public\, of all genders\, who are interested in learning more about how autistic women and girls are more likely to mask and go under the radar. \n

After the twinkling lights in the Fleet Street coffee shops are blown out and the great houses have closed their doors for the night\, Sancho must dodge slave catchers and worse. The man he hoped would help – a kindly duke who taught him to write – is dying. Sancho is desperate and utterly alone. \nSo how does Charles Ignatius Sancho meet the King\, write and play highly acclaimed music\, become the first Black person to vote in Britain and lead the fight to end slavery? \nIt’s time for him to tell his story\, one that begins on a tempestuous Atlantic Ocean\, and ends at the very centre of London life. And through it all\, he must ask: born amongst death\, how much can you achieve in one short life? \n  \nFor those unable to afford a book or ticket at present\, we have a limited amount of complimentary books/tickets. Please contact the bookshop via bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nOne of our booksellers will lead the book club\, and the group will be split up into smaller groups in breakout rooms to discuss the questions. A Zoom link will be emailed to ticketholders one week prior to the event starting. \nWe always ask that you are be respectful and kind whilst discussing the book and others’ opinions of it.
