SUMMARY:An Evening with C. D. Rose: Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome C. D. Rose to discuss his new short story collection\, Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea\, with Dr. Keith Crome. This is a stunning collection of 15 short\, dreamlike stories about memory\, illusion and language from the author of The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure\, Who’s Who When Everyone Is Someone Else\, and most recently The Blind Accordionist. This event is perfect for fans of short stories and literary fiction alike! \nTickets\nTicket and book: £17.99\nTicket only: £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea \nWelcome to the fictional universe of C. D. Rose\, whose stories seem to be set in some unidentifiable but vaguely Mitteleuropean nation\, and likewise have an uncanny sense of timelessness—the time could be some cobblestoned Victorian past era\, or the present\, or even the future. In these 15 dreamlike tales\, you’ll meet a forgotten composer who enters a nostalgic dream-world while marking time in a decaying Romanian seaport; two Russian brothers\, one blind and one deaf\, building an intricate model town during an interminable train ride across the steppe; a journalist whose interview with an artist turns into a dizzying roundelay of memory and image. Ghosts of the past mingle with the quiddities of modernity in a bewitching stew where lost masterpieces surface with translations in an invisible language; where image and photograph become mystically entwined\, and where the very nature of reality takes on a shimmering sense of possibility and illusion. \nAbout the Author \nC. D. Rose is an award-winning short-story writer\, and the author of the novels The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure and Who’s Who When Everyone Is Someone Else\, as well as the story collection The Blind Accordionist. He lives in Hebden Bridge.

SUMMARY:*SOLD OUT* Autism in Women and Girls: How It Presents Differently - Autistic Gals
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are proud to present Autism in Women and Girls: How it Presents Differently\, a talk from Sarah Jane Nuttall\, PhD research student. This event will include a presentation and Q&A. \nTickets are £3 and are available to buy here. There are complimentary tickets available for anyone who needs one – please contact us directly on bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nSarah Jane Nuttall is an autistic woman who is researching autism in women\, looking at its presentation\, and the limitations of current diagnostic criteria and screening tools. She is also writing a novel to help women to identify their autistic traits. \nAutism is underdiagnosed in women and girls. They are also more likely to be misdiagnosed and receive a late diagnosis. Women of colour and anyone who is not a straight cis white male are also less likely to get a diagnosis. There is a need to spread the word on how autism presents differently in women and girls. Recognising autistic traits in females is more difficult\, as is getting a diagnosis\, both of which argue for a female phenotype. Pre and post diagnosis support are practically non-existent. \nThis presentation is for anyone identifying as a woman who has ever wondered whether they are autistic\, and for friends\, family\, partners and the general public\, of all genders\, who are interested in learning more about how autistic women and girls are more likely to mask and go under the radar. \n

SUMMARY:The Book Club - Monday\, 27th November *ONLINE*
DESCRIPTION:This session of The Book Club will take place on Monday 27th November via Zoom. This month\, we are reading The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho by Paterson Joseph – £9.99 is the price of the book and a ticket to the session. The book can be delivered directly to you (please add your shipping address and tick the box for shipping) or you can collect it in store free of charge. You can buy a book and ticket here. \nIf you already own a copy of the book\, you can purchase a ticket only for £3. You can purchase a ticket only here. \nAbout The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho \nIt’s 1746 and Georgian London is not a safe place for a young Black man\, especially one who has escaped slavery. After the twinkling lights in the Fleet Street coffee shops are blown out and the great houses have closed their doors for the night\, Sancho must dodge slave catchers and worse. The man he hoped would help – a kindly duke who taught him to write – is dying. Sancho is desperate and utterly alone. \nSo how does Charles Ignatius Sancho meet the King\, write and play highly acclaimed music\, become the first Black person to vote in Britain and lead the fight to end slavery? \nIt’s time for him to tell his story\, one that begins on a tempestuous Atlantic Ocean\, and ends at the very centre of London life. And through it all\, he must ask: born amongst death\, how much can you achieve in one short life? \n  \nFor those unable to afford a book or ticket at present\, we have a limited amount of complimentary books/tickets. Please contact the bookshop via bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nOne of our booksellers will lead the book club\, and the group will be split up into smaller groups in breakout rooms to discuss the questions. A Zoom link will be emailed to ticketholders one week prior to the event starting. \nWe always ask that you are be respectful and kind whilst discussing the book and others’ opinions of it.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Rebecca May Johnson: Small Fires
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce House of Books & Friends are hosting author Rebecca May Johnson\, in celebration of the paperback release of her book Small Fires! Lauded as ‘an intense enquiry into the very nature of cooking’ by Nigella Lawson and ‘smart\, creative\, thoughtful’ by Ruby Tandoh\, Small Fires is the best of food writing and truly celebrates how joyful cooking can be. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket for £9.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only for £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening). \nThere are a small amount of tickets available for those unable to afford them at the moment – please contact us directly at 07597365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout Small Fires \nWhy do we cook? Is it just to feed ourselves and others? Or is there something more revolutionary going on? \nIn Small Fires\, Rebecca May Johnson reinvents cooking – that simple act of rolling up our sleeves\, wielding a knife\, spattering red hot sauce on our books – as a way of experiencing ourselves and the world. Cooking is thinking: about the liberating constraint of tying apron strings; the transformative dynamics of shared meals; the meaning of appetite and bodily pleasure; the wild subversiveness of the recipe\, beyond words or control. \nThis joyful\, revelatory work of memory and meditation both complicates and electrifies life in the kitchen. It shows us the radical potential of the thing we do every day: the power of small fires burning everywhere. \nAbout Rebecca May Johnson \nREBECCA MAY JOHNSON has published essays\, reviews and nonfiction with Granta\, Times Literary Supplement and Daunt Books Publishing\, among others\, and is an editor at the trailblazing food publication Vittles. Small Fires is her first book. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening With Rachel Grosvenor: The Finery
DESCRIPTION:We’re very excited to announce that we’ll be hosting Rachel Grosvenor in store at House of Books & Friends on Friday 18th August to discuss her debut novel\, The Finery. As a writing coach herself\, Rachel will be talking about her process of writing in the fantasy genre with her publisher Isabelle Kenyon from Fly on the Wall Press\, before conducting a reading and book signing. \nThe event will take place 18:30-20:00. Doors will be open from 18:00 for the 18:30 start. \nEvent ticket only: £3 \nBook and ticket: £10.99 \nAbout The Finery: \nTyranny is in the air in the city of Finer Bay\, and Professor Wendowleen Cripcot would like to be left alone\, thank you very much. The memories of the last one hundred years are quite enough to be getting on with\, if only these young upstarts from the government body\, The Finery\, would stop trying to control her every move. With the eyes of a dictator upon her\, there are not many places to hide…but Wendowleen has never been one to back down from a fight (just ask her pet wolf)\, and insurrection is brewing underground. \nEditor Isabelle Kenyon says…”Though a more fantasy genre\, protagonist Wendowleen reminded me of ‘The Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ for how lovable and grouchy she is as an unlikely leader and I loved her journey to discovering\, and then leading\, an underground rebellion… Wendowleen’s wolf – meant to be a guardian for her in her old age\, has never learnt to speak English and he’s a bit lazy at his duties… Indeed the world reminded me of Harry Potter for the comedic undertones\, mixed with real-world corrupt government policy\, such as the 80s Tory policy of the bedroom tax (the government wants Wendowleen to downsize for the ‘greater good’ and a city curfew is introduced at 8pm to ‘stop crime’)”.
