SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld - February
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club. Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In February\, we will be reading Women\, Race & Class by Angela Y Davis. \nPlease note in February\, one of our booksellers will be facilitating as Kate is away. \nTickets \nBook and ticket £9.99 \nTicket only £3 \nAs always\, there are a limited amount of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597 365380. \nAbout the book \nRanging from the age of slavery to contemporary injustices\, this groundbreaking history of race\, gender and class inequality by the radical political activist Angela Davis offers an alternative view of female struggles for liberation. \nTracing the intertwined histories of the abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements\, Davis examines the racism and class prejudice inherent in so much of white feminism\, and in doing so brings to light new pioneering heroines\, from field slaves to mill workers\, who fought back and refused to accept the lives into which they were born.

SUMMARY:The Book Club - Online
DESCRIPTION:This session of The Book Club will take place on Monday 23rd February 7-8 pm via Zoom. This month\, we are reading That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz by Malachy Tallack. £9.99 is the price of the book and a ticket to the session. The book can be delivered directly to you (please add your shipping address and tick the box for shipping) or you can collect it in store free of charge. You can buy a book and ticket here. \nIf you already own a copy of the book\, you can purchase a ticket alone for £3. You can purchase a ticket only here. \nFor those unable to afford a book or ticket at present\, we have a limited amount of complementary books/tickets. Please contact the bookshop via bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nOne of our booksellers will lead the book club\, and the group will be split up into smaller groups in breakout rooms to discuss the questions. A Zoom link will be emailed to ticketholders prior to the event starting. \nWe always ask that you be respectful and kind whilst discussing the book and others’ opinions of it. \nAbout the book \n1957. Sonny is working on a whaling ship in the South Atlantic\, reckoning with the most vicious storms he has ever seen. It’s a brutal way to make a living. \nWhen he finally returns to his Shetland home to build a life with his wife and young son\, the legacy of his time at sea is felt by all of them. In present day Shetland\, Jack is an old man\, living alone in the cottage where he grew up\, in the shadow of a hill. And it is here\, one evening\, that something appears on his doorstep. \nSomething that throws off the rhythm of his solitary existence in the most profound way. This is a story of unlikely friendship\, longing\, the power of music and the pull of home. It is about a life revisited – and reimagined.
