SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club with facilitator Kate Feld. Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In June we will be discussing King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes. \nWe will not be asking everyone to read the whole book\, though of course you can if you choose. We’ll focus our talk on these four essays: \n\nBad Lieutenants\nWho’s Taking it up the Arse\, You or Me?\nSleeping with the Enemy\nPorn Witches\n\nTW: This book contains an essay detailing the author’s experience of sexual assault. This is not one of the essays we will be focusing on in our discussion\, but we would like you to be aware. \nTickets\nBook and ticket: £10.99\nTicket only: £3 \nAs always\, there are a limited amount of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597 365380. \nAbout the book \n‘I write from the realms of the ugly\, for the ugly\, the frigid\, the unfucked and the unfuckables\, all those excluded from the great meat market of female flesh\, and for all those guys who don’t want to be protectors\, for those who would like to be but don’t know how\, for those who are not ambitious\, competitive\, or well-endowed. Because this ideal of the seductive white woman constantly being waved under our noses – well\, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist.’ \nPowerful\, provocative and personal\, King Kong Theory is a candid account of how the author of Baise-moi came to be Virginie Despentes. Drawing from personal experience\, Despentes shatters received ideas about rape and prostitution\, and explodes common attitudes towards sex and gender. King Kong Theory is a manifesto for a new punk feminism\, reissued here in a brilliant new translation by Frank Wynne. \n \nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.
