DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor our August session\, we have picked ‘The Cheat Book’ by Ramzee\, and we will be meeting on Sunday 4th August at 11am-12pm. Spanning fifty years of her life and work\, Space Crone brings together Le Guin’s writings on feminism and gender for the first time\, offering new insights into her imaginative\, multispecies feminist consciousness: from its roots in deep ecology and philosophies of non-violence to her self-education about racism and her writing on motherhood and ageing. \n \nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor July\, we will be reading Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly and meeting on Sunday 7th July\, 11am-12pm! They write and perform songs inspired by books and released 13 book-inspired albums collaborating with over 100 authors.  No previous knowledge of the books is required as the band guide the audience through the stories behind each song’s inspiration. The album’s songs are inspired by books\, including The Book Of Dust\, by Philip Pullman\, The Testaments\, by Margaret Atwood\, The Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell\, and Underland by Robert Macfarlane. The band are now based in Wigtown\, Scotland’s Book Town\, but will be on tour this year to promote the album\, playing in bookshops\, libraries and festivals all over the UK.

The results speak for themselves. Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments-depression\, ADHD\, addiction\, trauma\, anxiety\, chronic pain\, dementia\, diabetes\, and loneliness. \nAs health care’s de facto cycle of “diagnose-treat-repeat” reaches a breaking point\, social prescribing has also proven to reduce patient wait times\, lower hospitalization rates\, save money\, and reverse health worker burnout. As Hotz tours the globe to investigate the spread of social prescribing to over thirty countries\, she meets people personifying its revolutionary potential: an aspiring novelist whose art workshop helps her cope with trauma symptoms and rediscover her joy; a policy researcher whose swimming course helps her taper off antidepressants and feel excited to wake up in the morning; an army vet whose phone conversations help him form his only true friendship; and dozens more. \nThe success stories she finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment\, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us\, we can all start to feel better. \nAbout the author \nJulia Hotz is a solutions-focused journalist and author of THE CONNECTION CURE. After studying sociology at the University of Cambridge\, she joined the Solutions Journalism Network\, where she helps other journalists rigorously report on what’s working to solve today’s biggest problems. \nBefore becoming a journalist\, Julia worked as a teacher\, bartender\, pizza server\, and summer camp “forest ranger” (long story). Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

These free sessions\, which run in the summer months\, give us a chance to explore the prominent role of the Gothic in modern and contemporary culture. The sequel\, Three Guineas\, is a passionate polemic which draws a startling comparison between the tyrannous hypocrisy of the Victorian patriarchal system and the evils of fascism. \n \nAbout Kate  \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.
