SUMMARY:Lunchtime Lecture with Persephone Books
DESCRIPTION:Persephone Books published its first title in the spring of 1999. Founder Nicola Beauman’s original concept was to re-print a handful of ‘lost’ or out-of-print books every year\, most of them interwar novels by women. House of Books & Friends are so excited to welcome Nicola to present a one hour lecture with Q&A all about her journey into publishing\, life as a bookstore owner\, and answering the most important question of all: why are all the books grey? \nPersephone Books reprints neglected fiction and non-fiction\, mostly by women writers and mostly dating from the mid-twentieth century. All of their 147 books are intelligent\, thought-provoking and beautifully written. As well as novels\, they publish short stories\, diaries\, memoirs\, poetry\, gardening books and cookery books; each title has an elegant grey jacket and a patterned endpaper\, along with a matching bookmark. \n\nThe talk will be on Thursday 16th November and begin at 2pm for an hour. DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are over the moon to announce our first ever Bookshop Concert with the dreamy Áine Deane\, coming to perform in store on Sunday\, October 29th. Áine will perform unreleased songs\, answer a Q&A\, and recommend books that will be available to buy in-store. Tickets are a combination of standing and sitting – please contact us directly if you need a seat. \nDoors will open at 15:30\, with curfew at 18:00. \nTickets will be £15\, available to buy here. \nThere are a small amount of tickets available for those unable to afford them at the moment – please contact us directly at 07597365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout Áine… \nÁine is a 23 year old singer/songwriter based in London\, who started gaining traction on TikTok in 2021 whilst posting covers and original songs from her university bedroom during the pandemic. Her videos attracted the support of other artists\, such as Sam Smith\, Little Mix and Ed Sheeran and her TikTok now has over 270\,000 followers. Since then Áine has graduated\, moved to London and gone on to achieve some big milestones. She has amassed over 5 million streams on Spotify alone in just 20 months and her third single ‘Handmedowns’ was BBC Radio 1’s introducing track of the week in January 2022. \nShe has received constant support from the BBC Introducing team – especially in Cambridge where she has been interviewed many times and who play her songs regularly. Áine also played the BBC introducing stage at Latitude festival last year\, before also playing the main stage at Wilderness festival and the Brighton Dome for The Great Escape this year.

DESCRIPTION:This session of The Book Club will take place on Tuesday\, 29th August from 5:45pm-7:15pm in store\, for a 6pm start. This month\, we are reading The Queens of Sarmiento Park by Camila Sosa Villada! £9.99 is the price of the book and a ticket to the session. The book can be delivered directly to you (please add your shipping address and tick the box for shipping) or you can collect it in store free of charge. You can buy a book and ticket here. \nIf you already own a copy of the book\, you can purchase a ticket only for £3. Please contact the bookshop via bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nOne of our booksellers will lead the book club\, and the group will be split up into smaller groups to discuss the questions. \nWe always ask that you are be respectful and kind whilst discussing the book and others’ opinions of it. \nAbout The Queens of Sarmiento Park \nAuntie Encarna’s is the queerest boarding house in the world. \nFor Camila\, it is a refuge\, and the travesti who gather there are like family. At night they head out to Sarmiento Park to earn money. They stand together in the cold\, sharing stories and a hip flask of whiskey\, waiting for a car to slow down. Until\, one freezing evening\, Auntie Encarna hears crying in the bushes and wades in to investigate. When she finds an abandoned baby boy\, she will hear no arguments: she is bringing him home to care for him. Life for Camila and the others will never be the same again.

SUMMARY:Children's Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of our summer holiday events for children\, House of Books & Friends are hosting a writing workshop on Monday 28th August! Split into two parts\, the workshop will take place from 11:00-14:30 in store.  \nChildren will learn about the creation of characters\, how to show not tell\, world-building\, and how characters can interact with each other\, with our bookseller Lucy. This is the perfect activity for voracious readers and budding writers! There will be lots of fun activities to spark creativity and the opportunity for children to share their work in a supportive environment.  \nThere will be a break for lunch between 12:00-13:30. Lunch will not be provided\, but we do sell sandwiches in our café\, subject to availability.  \nSuitable for children 9-14 years old. 1 ticket per child. Adults accompanying children are welcome to sit in on the event or browse in the shop\, but children must not be left alone unsupervised – adults must remain in the building. \nClick here to buy a ticket for £3.
