SUMMARY:Lunchtime Lecture with Persephone Books
DESCRIPTION:Persephone Books published its first title in the spring of 1999. Founder Nicola Beauman’s original concept was to re-print a handful of ‘lost’ or out-of-print books every year\, most of them interwar novels by women. House of Books & Friends are so excited to welcome Nicola to present a one hour lecture with Q&A all about her journey into publishing\, life as a bookstore owner\, and answering the most important question of all: why are all the books grey? \nPersephone Books reprints neglected fiction and non-fiction\, mostly by women writers and mostly dating from the mid-twentieth century. All of their 147 books are intelligent\, thought-provoking and beautifully written. As well as novels\, they publish short stories\, diaries\, memoirs\, poetry\, gardening books and cookery books; each title has an elegant grey jacket and a patterned endpaper\, along with a matching bookmark. \n\nThe talk will be on Thursday 16th November and begin at 2pm for an hour. Tickets are a combination of standing and sitting – please contact us directly if you need a seat. \nDoors will open at 15:30\, with curfew at 18:00. \nTickets will be £15\, available to buy here. \nThere are a small amount of tickets available for those unable to afford them at the moment – please contact us directly at 07597365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout Áine… \nÁine is a 23 year old singer/songwriter based in London\, who started gaining traction on TikTok in 2021 whilst posting covers and original songs from her university bedroom during the pandemic. Her videos attracted the support of other artists\, such as Sam Smith\, Little Mix and Ed Sheeran and her TikTok now has over 270\,000 followers. Since then Áine has graduated\, moved to London and gone on to achieve some big milestones. She has amassed over 5 million streams on Spotify alone in just 20 months and her third single ‘Handmedowns’ was BBC Radio 1’s introducing track of the week in January 2022. \nShe has received constant support from the BBC Introducing team – especially in Cambridge where she has been interviewed many times and who play her songs regularly. Áine also played the BBC introducing stage at Latitude festival last year\, before also playing the main stage at Wilderness festival and the Brighton Dome for The Great Escape this year.

DESCRIPTION:Come down to House of Books & Friends for our Dino Day! \nFrom 10:00-12:00 on Saturday 5th August\, there will be readings of The Stompysaurus and The Hugasaurus from our bookseller Lucy as well as a dino paper plate making activity for children to have fun with. Dinosaur biscuits will also be available to buy in the cafe! This event is suitable for children 3+ years of age. \nThis event is completely free! There is no need to register interest\, just pop down on the day. \nAdults accompanying children are welcome to sit in on the event or browse the shop\, but children must not be left unsupervised – adults must remain in the building. \n \n

SUMMARY:Children's Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of our summer holiday events for children\, House of Books & Friends are hosting a writing workshop on Monday 31st July! Split into two parts\, the workshop will take place from 11:00-14:30 in store.  \nChildren will learn about the creation of characters\, how to show not tell\, world-building\, and how characters can interact with each other\, with our bookseller Lucy. This is the perfect activity for voracious readers and budding writers! There will be lots of fun activities to spark creativity and the opportunity for children to share their work in a supportive environment.  \nThere will be a break for lunch between 12:00-13:30. Lunch will not be provided\, but we do sell sandwiches in our café\, subject to availability.  \nSuitable for children 9-14 years old. 1 ticket per child.  Adults accompanying children are welcome to sit in on the event or browse in the shop\, but children must not be left alone unsupervised – adults must remain in the building. \nClick here to buy a ticket for £3.  \n
