A researcher with twenty years’ experience\, she went looking for answers. To her surprise the studies she looked at were exaggerated and misrepresented in the media\, forming the foundation for what she calls Good Mother myths. These myths are an assortment of narratives\, ideologies and stereotypes\, deployed to censure mothers and blame them for every societal ill. \nIncensed by the way bad science is used to shame mothers\, Alex Bollen decided to set the record straight. With meticulous research and keen insight\, Motherdom exposes both the shaky science and unjustified prescriptions about how mothers should ‘naturally’ behave. Competing visions of birth – ‘natural’ versus ‘medical’ – mean women can be criticised whatever happens\, raising the odds that birth will be a damaging\, even deadly\, experience. Mothers are judged and belittled whether they breast- or bottle-feed their babies. Bogus claims about brain development and dodgy attachment theories mean that whatever mothers do\, it is never enough. \nThis has to stop. We must replace Good Mother myths with a realistic approach to parenting. Alex Bollen proposes ‘motherdom’\, a more expansive conception of motherhood\, which values and respects the different ways people raise their children. Instead of finding fault with mothers\, Motherdom shifts our focus to the relationships and resources children need to flourish. \nAbout the author: \nAlex Bollen is a researcher with over twenty years of experience\, including as a former director of the research agency Ipsos MORI. She is a Postnatal Practitioner with the NCT\, the UK’s largest parenting charity\, and has been running postnatal groups for new mothers in South West London for over a decade. She is the mother of two children.

DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor March\, we will be reading The Nightmares of Finnegan Quick by Larry Hayes. You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy as part of your ticket\, or you can purchase a ticket only. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworms to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. Our Little Bookworms will also get their own book lovers passport to add to each month they attend as they jet set around the world through reading. \nAll sessions will be ticketed: £7.99 for the book and ticket\, and £2 for just the ticket. It is a thing we have and also a thing we do; a supposedly private act laden with public meaning; a personal preference shaped by outside forces; a place where pleasure and ethics can pull wildly apart. Since #MeToo many have fixed on consent as the key framework for achieving sexual justice. Yet consent is a blunt tool. \nTo grasp sex in all its complexity – its deep ambivalences\, its relationship to gender\, class\, race and power – we need to move beyond ‘yes and no’\, wanted and unwanted. We need to interrogate the fraught relationships between discrimination and preference\, pornography and freedom\, rape and racial injustice\, punishment and accountability\, pleasure and power\, capitalism and liberation. Shocked by this loss which\, despite her mother’s condition\, she had refused to fathom\, Ernaux embarks on a daunting journey back through time in an effort to recover the different facets of a woman whose openness to the world and appetite for reading created the conditions for the author’s own social ascent. \nMirroring A Man’s Place\, in which she narrates her father’s slow rise to material comfort\, A Woman’s Story explores the ambiguous and unshakeable bond between mother and daughter\, its fluctuation over the course of their lives\, the alienating worlds that separate them and the inescapable truth that we must lose the ones we love. In this quietly powerful tribute to the last thread connecting her to the world out of which she was born\, Ernaux attempts to do her mother the greatest justice she can: to portray her as the individual she was. \n\nBorn in 1940\, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy\, studied at Rouen University\, and later taught at secondary school. From 1977 to 2000\, she was a professor at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. In 2017\, Annie Ernaux was awarded the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her life’s work. In 2022\, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. \nTanya Leslie was the first translator of Annie Ernaux into English and translated a number of her works\, including A Woman’s Story (1991)\, A Man’s Place (1992)\, Simple Passion (1993)\, Shame (1998)\, I Remain in Darkness (1999) and Happening (2001)\, all for Seven Stories Press in the US. \n\nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor September\, we will be reading Maisie Vs. Antarctica by Jack Jackman and meeting on Sunday 3rd November! You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy as part of your ticket\, or you can purchase a ticket only. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworms to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. Our Little Bookworms will also get their own book lovers passport to add to each month they attend as they jet set around the world through reading. \nAll sessions will be ticketed: £7.99 for the book and ticket\, and £2 for just the ticket.
