DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor January\, we will be reading Nowhere Island by Tania Unsworth. Working three jobs\, responsible for her aging father\, and worrying that the crumbling warehouse she lives in is being sold to developers\, she is at a point of desperation. One day\, in the background of a self-portrait\, Lu accidentally captures on film a boy falling past her window to his death. The photograph turns out to be startlingly gorgeous\, the best work of art she’s ever made. It’s an image that could change her life…if she lets it. \nBut the decision to show the photograph is not easy. The boy is her neighbors’ son\, and the tragedy brings all the building’s residents together. It especially unites Lu with the boy’s grieving mother\, Kate. As the two forge an intense bond based on sympathy\, loneliness\, and budding attraction\, Lu feels increasingly unsettled and guilty\, torn between equally fierce desires: to use the photograph to advance her career and to protect a woman she has come to love.

Working three jobs\, responsible for her aging father\, and worrying that the crumbling warehouse she lives in is being sold to developers\, she is at a point of desperation. One day\, in the background of a self-portrait\, Lu accidentally captures on film a boy falling past her window to his death. The photograph turns out to be startlingly gorgeous\, the best work of art she’s ever made. It’s an image that could change her life…if she lets it. \nBut the decision to show the photograph is not easy. The boy is her neighbors’ son\, and the tragedy brings all the building’s residents together. It especially unites Lu with the boy’s grieving mother\, Kate. As the two forge an intense bond based on sympathy\, loneliness\, and budding attraction\, Lu feels increasingly unsettled and guilty\, torn between equally fierce desires: to use the photograph to advance her career and to protect a woman she has come to love.

Shocked by this loss which\, despite her mother’s condition\, she had refused to fathom\, Ernaux embarks on a daunting journey back through time in an effort to recover the different facets of a woman whose openness to the world and appetite for reading created the conditions for the author’s own social ascent. \nMirroring A Man’s Place\, in which she narrates her father’s slow rise to material comfort\, A Woman’s Story explores the ambiguous and unshakeable bond between mother and daughter\, its fluctuation over the course of their lives\, the alienating worlds that separate them and the inescapable truth that we must lose the ones we love. In this quietly powerful tribute to the last thread connecting her to the world out of which she was born\, Ernaux attempts to do her mother the greatest justice she can: to portray her as the individual she was. \n\nBorn in 1940\, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy\, studied at Rouen University\, and later taught at secondary school. From 1977 to 2000\, she was a professor at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. In 2017\, Annie Ernaux was awarded the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her life’s work. In 2022\, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. \nTanya Leslie was the first translator of Annie Ernaux into English and translated a number of her works\, including A Woman’s Story (1991)\, A Man’s Place (1992)\, Simple Passion (1993)\, Shame (1998)\, I Remain in Darkness (1999) and Happening (2001)\, all for Seven Stories Press in the US. \n\nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor September\, we will be reading Maisie Vs. Antarctica by Jack Jackman and meeting on Sunday 3rd November! You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy as part of your ticket\, or you can purchase a ticket only. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworms to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. DESCRIPTION:We return with our Lunchtime Lectures this September\, and have the wonderful Isabelle Kenyon coming to talk on Friday 20th September about the UK’s fascination with thrillers and the literary psychopath. Not only is Isabelle a fan herself\, and a publisher of several titles of this genre including The Sleepless by Liam Bell\, but also an author of a thriller novel\, The Dark Within Them.  \nFor many\, books are used as a form of escapism. Why then\, are we drawn to the darker sides of reality? What is it as a reader makes us want to explore the terror and misery that can come from the actions of those we deem ‘psychopaths’? Isabelle will talk us through where the genre began\, what lead to the growth in the market\, and what makes a really good scary novel. \nThe talk will begin at 1pm and last for 1 hour.
