SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club with facilitator Kate Feld. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597 365380. \nAbout the book \nA Room of One’s Own\, first published in 1929\, is a witty\, urbane and persuasive argument against the intellectual subjection of women\, particularly women writers. The sequel\, Three Guineas\, is a passionate polemic which draws a startling comparison between the tyrannous hypocrisy of the Victorian patriarchal system and the evils of fascism. \n \nAbout Kate  \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. SUMMARY:An Evening with Kate Feld: Deeryard Launch
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are excited to celebrate the launch of Deeryard\, Kate Feld’s new pamphlet of prose poetry and photographs\, published by Manchester independent press Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers. Kate will be reading poems from the book and will be joined by her friends Mick Conley and Lydia Unsworth\, who will read some of their own poems. The readings will be followed by a book signing. \nTaking place on Thursday\, 23rd May from 6:30-8pm\, we cannot wait to host this night of poetry and prose! \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket \nAs always\, there are a handful of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly on 07597 365380 or email bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com. \nAbout the book \nIn Deeryard\, a series of tenderly observed internal states\, natural settings and photographed landscapes serve to collapse the distance between the speaker and the world she inhabits. The poems are acts of orientation\, making their way through phenomenological inquiry toward a new sense of being at home in our lostness. \n“These prose poems are full of music: the sounds of a richly-evoked natural world where ‘something always has to be happening’\, and the sounds of language itself being wrung out for its harmonies. They are both experimental and beautiful\, highly-crafted and instinctive. In Kate Feld’s work\, a relationship with nature seems to be a relationship with the past and a reckoning with the self. If the places in these pieces are real\, then they are made imaginative by the inherent unreliability of memory and language; if they are imagined\, then they are made real by the quality of observation and sensory detail.” – Mick Conley \n“It is remarkable to be brought back into your life when the living of it requires a sort of packaging up and glossing over. Deeryard reclaims the friction. Image and text lead you through situations\, often of sound\, in which the slow accumulation of self-knowledge and the compulsions of non-human life become entangled and momentarily perceivable before slipping out of hand to resume their secret ongoing operations.” – Jenna Collins \nAbout the author \nKate Feld is a writer drawn to the cracks between established categories of form and genre. Her writing has appeared in literary journals including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Tolka and Hotel and in The Art of Being Dangerous: Exploring Women and Danger Through Creative Expression (Leuven University Press.) She founded creative nonfiction journal The Real Story in 2014 and teaches journalism at The University of Salford. A native of Vermont\, she has lived for many years in Manchester\, UK with her daughters. Deeryard is her first pamphlet. More of her writing can be found at katefeld.com.

SUMMARY:Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies at House of Books & Friends on 29th May for the first of their Spring/Summer Contemporary Reading Groups for 2024. Join us from 4.15 for refreshments before the discussion begins at 4.30. Author Emma Hind will be joining the discussions from 4.50pm\, so come along to hear word from the woman herself! \nThis is the first of a series of 4 reading groups (the first two will be in person\, the last two online). These free sessions\, which run in the summer months\, give us a chance to explore the prominent role of the Gothic in modern and contemporary culture. Come along for a relaxed conversation among enthusiasts and avid readers. \nTickets are free and can be reserved through their EventBrite here. \nFORMAT\nThe session will be led by one of our postgraduate Gothic researchers Sarah Dutson and Bronte Schiltz. There is no need to prepare questions or reviews. Please just turn up on the day ready to chat about the book. \nAUDIENCE\nThis reading group is free and open to everyone\, but please note that regular attendees tend to be postgraduate researchers and members of staff. For this reason\, the group might not suit total beginners. \nBOOK\nEmma Hinds’ debut novel The Knowing (2024) is based on real historical characters and set in the slums of nineteenth-century New York. It centres on an abused tattoo artist’s model and her strange gift of summoning the dead. SUMMARY:An Evening with Munir Hachemi: Living Things
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Munir Hachemi at House of Books & Friends on Thursday 30th May to discuss his new book\, Living Things\, published by Fitzcarraldo. The event will take start at 6pm\, and will include a conversation with Munir Hachemi and a Q&A\, before an opportunity to get your books signed. \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket only \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nLiving Things follows four recent graduates – Munir\, G\, Ernesto and Álex – who travel from Madrid to the south of France to work the grape harvest. Except things don’t go as planned: they end up working on an industrial chicken farm and living on a campsite\, where a general sense of menace takes hold. What follows is a compelling and incisive examination of precarious employment\, capitalism\, immigration and the mass production of living things\, all interwoven with the protagonist’s thoughts on literature and the nature of storytelling. A genre-bending and dystopian eco-thriller\, Living Things is a punk-like blend of Roberto Bolaño’s The Savage Detectives and Samanta Schweblin’s Fever Dream\, heralding an exciting new voice in international fiction. \nAbout the author \nMunir Hachemi’s career as a writer began with him selling his stories in the form of fanzines in the bars of the Lavapiés neighbourhood of Madrid. He is the author of Living Things (2018) and El árbol viene [The Coming of the Tree] (2023)\, and is also a translator from Chinese and English. In 2021\, he appeared on Granta’s Best of Young Spanish-Language Novelists list. He currently lives in Buenos Aires. \nAbout the translator \nJulia Sanches is a literary translator working from Portuguese\, Spanish\, and Catalan into English. She has translated works such as Dogs of Summer by Andrea Abreu\, Eartheater by Dolores Reyes\, and Boulder by Eva Baltasar\, which was longlisted for the International Booker 2023.
