SUMMARY:Will Dean in conversation with Rob Parker: The Chamber
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are thrilled to welcome Will Dean\, to discuss his new book The Chamber\, with Rob Parker! After a sell-out event last year\, we’re so excited to have Will back to talk all things The Chamber – a high concept thriller set in a hyperbaric chamber on the North Sea. This event will take place at House of Books & Friends on Monday\, 10th June from 6-7pm\, and will include a discussion between Will and Rob\, an audience Q&A\, and an opportunity to get your books signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket – £20\nClick here to buy a ticket only (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) – £5 \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nHIGH PRESSURE OUTSIDE\nOn a boat heading out into the North Sea\, Ellen Brooke steels herself to spend almost a month locked inside a hyperbaric chamber with five other divers. They are all being paid handsomely for this work – to be lowered each day inside a diving bell to the sea bed\, taking it in turns to dive down and repair oil pipes that lie in the dark waters. It is a close knit team and it has to be: any error or loss of trust could be catastrophic. \nEXTREME PRESSURE INSIDE\nAll is going to plan until one of the divers is found unresponsive in his bunk. He hadn’t left the chamber. It will take four more days of decompression\, locked away together\, before the hatch can be opened. Four more days of bare steel\, intrusive thoughts\, and the constant struggle not to give way to panic. Mind games\, exhaustion\, suspicion\, and\, most of all\, pressure. And if someone does unlock the door\, everyone dies… \nAbout the author \nWill Dean grew up in the East Midlands and had lived in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying Law at the LSE and working in London\, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a house in a boggy clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest\, and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel\, Dark Pines\, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club\, shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize and named a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. Red Snow was published in January 2019 and won Best Independent Voice at the Amazon Publishing Readers’ Awards\, 2019. Black River was shortlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Award in 2021. The Last Thing to Burn was released to widespread acclaim in January 2021. First Born was published in 2022. \n \nAbout Rob Parker \nRob Parker is a married father of three\, who lives in Warrington\, UK. The author of the Ben Bracken thrillers\, Crook’s Hollow\, and the bestselling Audible Original Far From The Tree\, he enjoys a rural life on an old pig farm (now minus pigs)\, writing horrible things between school runs. \nRob writes full time\, attends various author events across the UK\, and boxes regularly for charity. He spends a lot of time in schools across the North\, encouraging literacy\, story-telling and creative-writing\, and somehow squeezes in time to co-host the For Your Reconsideration film podcast\, appear regularly on The Blood Brothers Crime Podcast\, and is a member of the Northern Crime Syndicate.

SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club with facilitator Kate Feld. Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In June we will be discussing King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes. \nWe will not be asking everyone to read the whole book\, though of course you can if you choose. We’ll focus our talk on these four essays: \n\nBad Lieutenants\nWho’s Taking it up the Arse\, You or Me?\nSleeping with the Enemy\nPorn Witches\n\nTW: This book contains an essay detailing the author’s experience of sexual assault. This is not one of the essays we will be focusing on in our discussion\, but we would like you to be aware. \nTickets\nBook and ticket: £10.99\nTicket only: £3 \nAs always\, there are a limited amount of complimentary tickets available for those who need them. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597 365380. \nAbout the book \n‘I write from the realms of the ugly\, for the ugly\, the frigid\, the unfucked and the unfuckables\, all those excluded from the great meat market of female flesh\, and for all those guys who don’t want to be protectors\, for those who would like to be but don’t know how\, for those who are not ambitious\, competitive\, or well-endowed. Because this ideal of the seductive white woman constantly being waved under our noses – well\, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist.’ \nPowerful\, provocative and personal\, King Kong Theory is a candid account of how the author of Baise-moi came to be Virginie Despentes. Drawing from personal experience\, Despentes shatters received ideas about rape and prostitution\, and explodes common attitudes towards sex and gender. King Kong Theory is a manifesto for a new punk feminism\, reissued here in a brilliant new translation by Frank Wynne. \n \nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Julia Hotz: The Connection Cure
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Julia Hotz to House of Books & Friends to discuss her new book\, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement\, Nature\, Art\, Service\, and Belonging. \nJulia will be in conversation with Bev Taylor. Following this\, there will be a Q&A session. Julia will also be hosting a 5-10 minute interactive audience exercise reflecting on different versions of the book’s central question “What matters to you?”\, and then connecting to local “medicine”. The evening will conclude with an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of The Connection Cure. \nThe event will take place between 6:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday\, 26th June\, in store. \nTickets\nBook and ticket: £16.99\nTicket only: £5 (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book  \nIn this combination of diligent science reporting\, moving patient success stories\, and surprising self-discovery\, journalist Julia Hotz helps us discover lasting and life-changing medicine in our own communities. \nTraditionally\, when we get sick\, health care professionals ask\, “What’s the matter with you?” But around the world\, teams of doctors\, nurses\, therapists\, and social workers have started to flip the script\, asking “What matters to you?” Instead of solely pharmaceutical prescriptions\, they offer ‘social prescriptions’-referrals to community activities and resources\, like photography classes\, gardening groups\, and volunteering gigs. The results speak for themselves. Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments-depression\, ADHD\, addiction\, trauma\, anxiety\, chronic pain\, dementia\, diabetes\, and loneliness. \nAs health care’s de facto cycle of “diagnose-treat-repeat” reaches a breaking point\, social prescribing has also proven to reduce patient wait times\, lower hospitalization rates\, save money\, and reverse health worker burnout. And as a general sense of unwellness plagues more of us\, social prescriptions can help us feel healthier than we’ve felt in years. As Hotz tours the globe to investigate the spread of social prescribing to over thirty countries\, she meets people personifying its revolutionary potential: an aspiring novelist whose art workshop helps her cope with trauma symptoms and rediscover her joy; a policy researcher whose swimming course helps her taper off antidepressants and feel excited to wake up in the morning; an army vet whose phone conversations help him form his only true friendship; and dozens more. \nThe success stories she finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment\, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us\, we can all start to feel better. \nAbout the author \nJulia Hotz is a solutions-focused journalist and author of THE CONNECTION CURE. After studying sociology at the University of Cambridge\, she joined the Solutions Journalism Network\, where she helps other journalists rigorously report on what’s working to solve today’s biggest problems. \nBefore becoming a journalist\, Julia worked as a teacher\, bartender\, pizza server\, and summer camp “forest ranger” (long story). She enjoys hiking up mountains\, riling up dance floors\, running around parks\, biking around New York\, budget traveling around the world\, and building the ‘longest road’ around Catan. \n \nAbout Bev Taylor \nBev Taylor set up the national social prescribing programme at NHS England between 2015-19\, before being seconded to set up the national academy for social prescribing. Bev has worked alongside Manchester Camerata since 2022\, helping to develop a Music Champions programme. Her new role will be to nurture a national music and dementia learning network\, as part of Camerata’s Centre of Excellence for music and dementia.
