SUMMARY:David Scott in conversation with Nooruddean Choudry: Mancunians
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce David Scott will be coming to House of Books & Friends on Wednesday 3rd July to discuss his book Mancunians: Where Do We Start\, Where Do I Begin? David will be in conversation with Nooruddean Choudry\, author of Inshallah United and Manchester United journalist and fanatic\, to discuss the side of Manchester that often gets underrepresented and overlooked: the musicians of colour\, the football fans alienated by rampant commercialism\, frustrated public figures\, optimistic developers and ambitious artists. The evening will involve a discussion\, Q&A and a chance to get your copy of Mancunians signed. \nTickets\nClick here to buy a book and ticket for £11.99\nClick here to buy a ticket only for £5 (this is redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening) \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nIn the late 1990s\, Manchester was a city in upheaval. The devastation of the IRA bomb and the closure of the notorious Haçienda nightclub were seismic events that rocked the city’s confidence at a time when identikit bands were flooding its clubs and bars\, fueled on anthemic guitar rock and swagger. Stereotypes were everywhere\, while the spirit of Manchester was silently suffocating. Through a mixture of memoir and interviews with well-known Mancunians such as Guy Garvey\, Tunde Babalola\, Sylvia Tella\, Badly Drawn Boy and Stan Chow\, David Scott portrays the city at the turn of the century in a way never seen before.

SUMMARY:Little Bookworms Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor July\, we will be reading Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly and meeting on Sunday 7th July\, 11am-12pm! You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy as part of your ticket\, or you can purchase a ticket only. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworms to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. Our Little Bookworms will also get their own book lovers passport to add to each month they attend as they jet set around the world through reading. \nAll sessions will be ticketed: £7.99 for the book and ticket\, and £2 for just the ticket. All little ones must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased on our website and in store. A limited number of complementary tickets will also be reserved for those who might need them so please do let us know. \nIf you have any questions about the book club or tickets\, you can always take a look at our website\, email us\, or ask a friendly bookseller in store. \nAbout the book \nFrom fixing the class computer to repairing old radios\, twelve-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she’s the only deaf person in her school\, so people often treat her like she’s not very smart. If you’ve ever felt like no one was listening to you\, then you know how hard that can be. \nWhen she learns about Blue 55\, a real whale who is unable to speak to other whales\, Iris understands how he must feel. Then she has an idea: she should invent a way to “sing” to him! But he’s three thousand miles away. How will she play her song for him? \nFull of heart and poignancy\, this affecting story by sign language interpreter Lynne Kelly shows how a little determination can make big waves.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Daisy Buchanan: Pity Party
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are excited to welcome back our friend Daisy Buchanan on Monday 15th July to discuss her new book Pity Party! The event will take place from 6-7pm and will include a Q&A and the chance to get your book signed by Daisy too. \nTickets\n£5 Ticket only (redeemable against a copy of the book on the evening)\n£18.99 Book and ticket \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nKatherine lives by the rules\, ticks all the boxes and prepares for the worst\, even while she hopes for the best.\nThen the worst actually happens and\, as she tries to navigate life as a young widow\, it turns out she was not prepared at all.\nNothing scares Katherine more than stopping\, but everyone insists she needs to take some time for herself. Head to a wellness retreat\, they said. Enjoy some me-time\, they said…\nExcept this retreat isn’t the pity party she was hoping for. Instead of massages\, she has erotic meditation\, and instead of spa treatments she has scream therapy.\nKatherine has never lost control in her life. In fact\, she’s fairly certain that if she starts screaming she might never stop. \nBut she’s about to let go\, and everyone had better stand back…\nHilarious\, heartbreaking and honest\, this is a story about learning how to stop playing it safe in a world that feels so dangerous – and showing up to the party\, even when it feels impossible. \nAbout the author \nDaisy Buchanan is an award-winning journalist\, author and broadcaster. Her books include the novels Insatiable (longlisted for the CWIP prize)\, Careering (as heard on BBC Sounds) and Limelight\, and the non-fiction titles How to Be a Grown Up and The Sisterhood. She hosts the Daisy Is… podcast series\, and the chart-topping podcast You’re Booked\, where she interviews legendary writers from all over the world about how their reading habits shape their work. You can also hear her on beloved podcasts including Comfort Blanket\, Cuddle Club and Crushed. Daisy has appeared on a number of TV and radio shows including Woman’s Hour\, The Today Programme\, Soul Music\, A Good Read\, This Morning and Good Morning Britain. She is a TEDx speaker and has guest presented the Booker Prize for BBC News.
