SUMMARY:Little Bookworms November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor November\, we will be reading Skulkmoor by Hana Tooke. You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy as part of your ticket\, or you can purchase a ticket only. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworms to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash for all. \nAll sessions will be ticketed: £8.99 for the book and ticket\, and £2 for just the ticket. All little ones must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased on our website and in store. A limited number of complementary tickets will also be reserved for those who might need them so please do let us know. \nIf you have any questions about the book club or tickets\, you can always take a look at our website\, email us\, or ask a friendly bookseller in store. \nAbout the book: \nOnce\, the great house of Skulkmoor stood proudly on its hillside\, commanding the attention of anyone who came by. Now\, it is a curious puzzle of a place – not least thanks to the giant wall which cuts it straight in half\, separating the two warring families that live inside it. \nFor you see\, many years ago\, the Fox family was torn apart by a question of murder – and of inheritance. With no clear heir\, the vast family fortune – and the house – has been literally divided in two. But now\, two young cousins\, one from rival sides of Skulkmoor\, must race to solve the crime – or face losing their home forever.

SUMMARY:Hinterland Festival: Death Cafe x Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:What happens when we make a bit more space to think and talk about death? \nFor this special Journal Club\, Hinterland will explore death and dying through a mix of reflective writing and open conversation. Their team will start with some guided prompts to get you thinking about your own relationship with mortality\, loss\, meaning and the ways we live our lives followed by an informal Death Café conversation. \nThere’s no expectation to have the “right” things to say\, and no pressure to share what you’ve written. You can write privately\, listen\, join the conversation\, or move between all three. \nDeath can be a difficult thing to talk about\, but it’s also something we all have in common. This is a chance to approach it with curiosity\, honesty and a bit of openness\, in a friendly and inclusive space. \nNo writing experience needed. Just bring a notebook and pen. \nTickets \nReserve your free place here on Eventbrite. \nEveryone welcome. \n\nQuestions about an event? Ask us.

SUMMARY:LUNCHTIME LECTURE - Sophie Oliver 'What the Dresses Know'
DESCRIPTION:House of Books and Friends is excited to introduce the next guest for their ‘Lunchtime Lecture’ series: Sophie Oliver\, author of What the Dresses Know: A women’s history of modernism told through clothes. Join us on 10th November to hear Sophie discuss her book. \nThe talk will begin at 1pm and last for 1 hour. \nTickets \nBook and ticket £20 \nTicket only £5 \nAs always\, we have a limited amount of complimentary tickets for this event for anyone who needs it. Please contact us directly at bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.com or call 07597365380. \nAbout the book \nPioneering women were at the heart of the movement known as modernism. In What the dresses know\, Sophie Oliver offers a new account of their radical experiments and extraordinary lives\, told through the clothes they made and wore. \nFrom a dress Vanessa Bell rescued from the London Blitz to Frida Kahlo’s huipiles and a waistcoat embroidered for Gertrude Stein by Alice B. Toklas\, these special objects tell a story of artists seeking transformation. But getting dressed is rarely straightforward. Modernist women used clothes to think through the contradictions of the modern world: the inequalities of industrialisation\, the terrible conformities demanded by fascism and racism and the call of feminists\, socialists and avant-gardists to act differently and take up new forms of art. \nWhat the dresses know is an exhilarating account of women’s bold attempts to make history during years of tumultuous change. A distinctive new voice in cultural criticism\, Sophie Oliver uses clothes to explore the challenges modernist women faced – and to understand her own impulses in writing about them.

SUMMARY:AUTHOR EVENT: 'I Made You Up Inside My Head' with Marta Perez-Carbonell (in partnership with Instituto Cervantes)
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends is overjoyed to welcome author Marta Perez-Carbonell to discuss her book\, ‘I Made You Up Inside My Head’. The event will take place on Wednesday 11th November and will involve a discussion\, a Q&A\, and a chance for you to get your book signed by Marta. Marta will be in conversation with lecturer Luis Castellví Laukamp. \nThis event is in partnership with Instituto Cervantes. \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket only \nAbout the book \nOn a sleeper train from London and Edinburgh\, a woman and two strangers pass the time by telling stories about their lives. \nOne man reveals the true story behind the novel he wrote: the young man\, Hans\, who trusted him with intimate details about his life\, and whose confidence he betrayed when he converted Hans’s life into fiction for his own gain. \nAs her cabin-mates reveal that Hans has since disappeared\, with foul-play suspected\, Alicia becomes gripped by the question of what really happened between the two men. She begins to re-examine her own memories\, to try and discern what brought her to this point – and her involvement in the story told that night soon goes beyond a mere observer. \nI Made You Up Inside My Head questions the stories we tell ourselves and others\, and the fine line that separates reality from fiction – all while weaving an engrossing tale of betrayal\, loss and guilt. \nAbout the author \nMarta Pérez-Carbonell was born and raised in Spain and now teaches contemporary Spanish literature at Colgate University in upstate New York; she has also worked as a translator and interpreter. I Made You Up Inside My Head is her first novel. \nAbout the chair \nLuis Castellví Laukamp is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish Cultural Studies at The University of Manchester. His teaching and research interests focus on the literatures and cultures of early modern Spain\, Latin America and the Philippines. He also specialises in translating both poetry and prose from English into Spanish. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club – November 2026
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club\, with facilitator Kate Feld. Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In November\, we will be discussing Doppelganger by Naomi Klein. It will take place on Wednesday\, 18th of November at 6 pm. \nTickets \nClick here to buy a book and ticket \nClick here to buy a ticket only \nAbout the book \nWhat if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired a double? Someone almost like you\, and yet not you at all? \nWhen Naomi Klein discovered that a woman who shared her first name\, but had radically different\, harmful views\, was getting chronically mistaken for her\, it seemed too ridiculous to take seriously. Then suddenly it wasn’t. She started to find herself grappling with a distorted sense of reality\, becoming obsessed with reading the threats on social media\, the endlessly scrolling insults from the followers of her doppelganger. Why had her shadowy other gone down such an extreme path? Why was identity – all we have to meet the world – so unstable? \nTo find out\, Klein decided to follow her double into a bizarre\, uncanny mirror world: one of conspiracy theories\, anti-vaxxers and demagogue hucksters\, where soft-focus wellness influencers make common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting ‘the children’). In doing so\, she lifts the lid on our own culture during this surreal moment in history\, as we turn ourselves into polished virtual brands\, publicly shame our enemies\, watch as deep fakes proliferate and whole nations flip from democracy to something far more sinister.
