Description

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a dystopian classic: ‘exciting, relevant and thought-provoking’ (Stephen King). When a group of schoolboys are stranded on a desert island, what could go wrong?

‘One of my favorite books – I read it every couple of years.’ (Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games)

A plane crashes on a desert island. The only survivors are a group of schoolboys. By day, they discover fantastic wildlife and dazzling beaches, learning to survive; at night, they are haunted by nightmares of a primitive beast. Orphaned by society, it isn’t long before their innocent childhood games devolve into a savage, murderous hunt …

‘Stands out mightily in my memory … Such a strong statement about the human heart.’ (Patricia Cornwell)

‘Terrifying and haunting.’ (Kingsley Amis)

‘Beautifully written, tragic and provocative.’ (E. M. Forster)

ONE OF THE BBC’S ICONIC ‘NOVELS THAT SHAPED OUR WORLD’

What readers are saying:

‘Every real human being should read this … This is what we are.’

‘It’s brilliant, it’s captivating, it’s thought provoking and brutal and for some, its truly terrifying.’

‘It can be read and re-read many times, and every time something new will appear.’

‘There is a reason why this is studied at school … Excellent read.’

‘This is one of the few books I’ve read that I keep on my Kindle to read again.’

‘I revisit this every few years and it’s always fresh and impressive … One of the best books I’ve ever read.’

House of Books & Friends is thrilled to welcome Carolyn O’Brien on Thursday 14th of May from 6pm to discuss their new book, ‘Rose and Renzo‘. The evening will involve a discussion, a Q&A, and a chance to get your book signed by Carolyn.

About the book
After the death of their father, two sisters arrive in Manchester’s vibrant ‘Little Italy’: creative misfit, Rose, and her much older sister, Ivy. Frustrated and desperate to pursue her artistic passion, Rose meets Renzo, a painter arrived from Europe. Their connection is instant and powerful. Yet as their feelings deepen, Renzo’s past in Mussolini’s Italy remains a mystery. In a time of looming fascism in Europe, Blackshirts are marching the streets. Rose is drawn to fight this, but what about Renzo?

Athena recommends the book 'A Killer In Paradise' by Tom Hindle to be your next mystery read!

'I devoured this book in two days. It has intriguing characters, a beautiful setting and lots of fun twists to keep you on your toes! I really love Hindle’s use of an enclosed circle of suspects, much like Agatha Christie's mystery novels; I find that this makes for a more gripping and intimate reading experience. This is a great book to read if you’re looking to for something which keeps you guessing to the end.'

About the book

Secrets, lies and love as the DDR collapses.

It is 1989, and in a small Baltic city in East Germany, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, three young people from vastly different backgrounds become friends. Armando is a factory worker from Mozambique, Lolita is a medical student from India, and Theo is an East Berliner who dreams of being a writer.

When Armando and Lolita make a grisly discovery, they find themselves caught up in the politics of Theo’s homeland more than ever before. While a quiet revolution sweeps through Eastern Europe, and the Berlin Wall teeters, the three find themselves entangled in a poignant love triangle which threatens their futures.

As the world order shifts, their three lives are bound together in a web of love, lies and fears, leaving each irrevocably changed.
