I think we can all agree that there’s more to business than making money. There needs to be a reason, a motivation or a higher cause. If you haven’t got one it's only a matter of time until you hit some hurdles if you haven't already. All of our profits are reinvested into our community, find out more here https://houseofbooksandfriends.com/

Another author event! On Thursday, 13th April, we're so excited to welcome @andy_spinoza to House of Books & Friends to discuss his new book Manchester Unspun - the story of a city in decline that transforms into a cultural powerhouse. In a career that's taken him from PR to journalism, Spinoza has encountered Manchester's biggest icons, such as Tony Wilson and Alex Ferguson. Manchester Unspun is an insider's tale of Manchester's media and cultural scene.

🌼 Kim Moore’s 'All The Men I Never Married' follows a lifetime of interactions with men from childhood to adulthood and encompasses emotions of guilt, shame, hatred, power, and love, and tells a story that deserves to be forever heard. These poems come from a heart-breaking perspective of how conflicting it can feel to live inside a woman’s body and to experience emotions of desire. From patronising taxi drivers to coercive dates, Moore’s poems highlight the prevalence of sexual harassment experienced by women of all ages. They take us from memories of playful childhood innocence through to the frightening realisation of the corruption of the adult world.

🌼 Each poem is a warning, a near escape, a horrible ‘could have been’. We see how each encounter and its lasting mental torment forces the protagonist to repeatedly question what she has experienced, and to battle with placing blame on her attacker and feeling responsible for the course of events. Victims are forced to perpetually question their own actions and memories as a result of systemic victim blaming by offenders and institutions that fail to hold them responsible. In Moore’s poems, these muddled emotions of anger, shame, responsibility and vulnerability show how the effect of sexual assault leaves scars and lasts forever.

🌼 Winning the Forward Prize for best collection in 2022, these markedly feminist poems tell important stories in a world where one in four women have experienced rape or sexual assault as an adult. The entire collection could be read one-thousand times over and would still be as impactful as on first read.

Journeying into further education can be an isolating period, although there are many expectations that your university days are the time of your life.

The pressure to have a good time whilst also getting good grades can be difficult for many to manage. Navigating the drinking and drugs culture at UK unis, moving away from stable support networks and financial instability can all play a role in loneliness in students. Mature students may also feel lonely as students are typically a youth-focused demographic.

However, it's completely normal to feel lonely in what can be a chaotic and uncertain period for lots of people. Limiting your time on social media and trying not to compare yourself is a great place to start if you're feeling isolated.

At House of Books & Friends, we hope to be a relaxing, warm environment for students to study, or simply spend some time with a book! As always, do come in and chat to our booksellers, and if you're worrying about money - there's no pressure to spend anything 📚
