Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld – October

House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club with facilitator Kate Feld. Taking place monthly, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In October, we will be reading Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector, a genre-blurring and formally audacious novel translated by Benjamin Moser.

About the book
Lispector’s final novel is among her best — a haunting exploration of innocence, femininity, illness, and identity-slippage. The Hour of the Star follows Macabéa, a typist living in the slums of Rio whose grasp on reality is confused and oblique. Yet, as our narrator Rodrigo S.M. comes to realize, Macabéa’s tenuous existence also affords her an inner freedom. Publisher’s Weekly has called Lispector a ‘literary magician’, and this novel certainly contains enough wonder, will, and beauty to merit that description.
