Description

A hilarious, heartfelt supernatural YA rom-com in which a would-be guardian angel falls in love with a living boy – perfect for fans of The Good Place, Afterlove and The Dead Romantics.

“The mix of playful/heartfelt, happy/sad, Victorian/modern and unreal/historical offers an original context.” – The Sunday Times

“Funny, heart-warming and bittersweet -a delightfully original romcom with a memorable cast of characters. I raced through it!” – Ravena Guron, author of This Book Kills

“Utterly charming and original, Cloud Nine is woven together with Sue Cunningham’s trademark heart and humour.” – Louise Finch, Carnegie Medal-shortlisted author of The Eternal Return of Clara Hart

“ “Hilarious, poignant. A super-funny, sparky story of the triumph of love that will leave you with a lump in your throat” – Tia Fisher, author of Crossing the Line, Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Winner 2024

“A sharp, witty and unique ghostly tale that I absolutely flew through!” – The Sunday Times

“The mix of playful/heartfelt, happy/sad, Victorian/modern and unreal/historical offers an original context.” – Tess James-Mackey, author of Someone Is Watching You and You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead

“Perfect for fans of BBC’s Ghosts and The Good Place, I was hooked from the very first page!” – A.J. Clack, author of Lie or Die

Sixteen-year-old Evangeline has been dead for decades. Her accidentally heroic demise secured her a spot on Cloud Nine, the luxurious top tier of the Afterlife – but it turns out that even paradise can get boring.

After a century of terminal niceness, Evvy volunteers to train as a celestial guide. Now it’s her job to watch over people during their final hours on earth, ensuring they don’t screw up their chances of a decent Afterlife.

Evvy isn’t averse to bending the rules, and she always gets results – until she makes the fatal mistake of falling for a living boy.

Why can Tom see Evvy when he’s not scheduled to depart yet? And how can she make this work when he’s alive, she’s dead, and fraternising with Beforelifers is absolutely forbidden?

Suddenly, Evvy is facing the biggest challenge of her Afterlife…

  • A fresh, original and funny novel from the author of Totally Deceased – like You’ve Reached Sam or Afterlove, but with the humour of The Good Place and the Barbie movie.
  • Ideal for fans of Gabrielle Zevin’s Elsewhere and The Love of my Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood.
  • A heartfelt romance spanning life and death, with a relatable contemporary world, an imagined afterlife and an unforgettable cast of characters from across history.

As part of our Connection Counts campaign this November, bookseller Brooke would like to recommend Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession.🐠

Leonard and Hungry Paul is the story of two friends who would ordinarily remain uncelebrated. The novel highlights the special in the mundane and prompts the idea that maybe we could learn from the things (and people) we often overlook. It's also recently been adapted for TV by the BBC!

As part of our Connection Counts campaign this November, bookseller Lydia would like to recommend Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. 🌟

Rilke’s letters, written to a young military cadet looking to establish a career in poetry, are like spiritual sustenance. His advice on creative solitude is relevant to this day. His writing on loneliness manages to both validate the feeling and fortify against despair. This is a must read for anyone in need of some connection and consolation in a difficult age. 🌷

This month we’re highlighting the importance of connection with our ‘Connections Count’ campaign. HOBAF is all about connection, with our mission statement being to tackle social isolation and loneliness. Our bookworms will be highlighting books about connection all through November, as well as hosting our Coffee & Connections campaign to bring people together.

In Tawada's trilogy, Hiruko searches for someone who speaks her native language in a world where her country has ceased to exist. As her search brings new friends into her life, we examine what it means to belong, to feel at home, and whether our roots are truly all that ground us. Scattered All Over the Earth was released in 2023, and 2025 sees part two and three of the series released to UK audiences and available to pick up in-store now ⭐🌄
