Description

This dystopian classic, which has sold over 25 million copies, is ‘exciting, relevant and thought-provoking’ (Stephen King). When a group of schoolboys are stranded on a desert island, what could go wrong?

‘One of my favorite books – I read it every couple of years.’ (Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games)

A plane crashes on a desert island. The only survivors are a group of schoolboys. By day, they discover fantastic wildlife and dazzling beaches, learning to survive; at night, they are haunted by nightmares of a primitive beast. Orphaned by society, it isn’t long before their innocent childhood games devolve into a savage, murderous hunt …

‘Stands out mightily in my memory … Such a strong statement about the human heart.’ (Patricia Cornwell)

‘Terrifying and haunting.’ (Kingsley Amis)

‘Beautifully written, tragic and provocative.’ (E. M. Forster)

ONE OF THE BBC’S ICONIC ‘NOVELS THAT SHAPED OUR WORLD’

What readers are saying:

‘Every real human being should read this … This is what we are.’

‘It’s brilliant, it’s captivating, it’s thought provoking and brutal and for some, its truly terrifying.’

‘It can be read and re-read many times, and every time something new will appear.’

‘There is a reason why this is studied at school … Excellent read.’

‘This is one of the few books I’ve read that I keep on my Kindle to read again.’

‘I revisit this every few years and it’s always fresh and impressive … One of the best books I’ve ever read.’

Bookseller Athena thinks you should all read Whistler by Ann Patchett!
'The queen of literary fiction, Ann Patchett, has done it again! Blending beautiful narrative with an eye for emotional depth, Whistler is a beautiful exploration of family and memory. If you haven’t read any Patchett, I highly recommend, as she represents one’s personal emotional experiences in a compelling and often relatable way. I often find myself fully immersed in the tight worlds she creates through her story telling. In this novel, a chance encounter reconnects a woman with her stepfather from her youth, who she hasn’t been in contact with in over 40 years. As their relationship was abruptly cut short , the two characters have a lot of catching up to do, often revealing the enduring nature of love and chosen families. Fun fact, Ann Patchett has written multiple novels from her treadmill desk!'

Another islander has left the villa... Ethan is moving on to greener pastures as he has just graduated from Uni! This tremendous accomplishment sadly means that he is breaking up with the north for London. He has been a massive support to the team over the last 8 months, constantly giving 110% to customers and staff! We will miss him so much! In honour of his leaving, swipe to see some of his favorite reads from his time spent as a bookseller at House of Books and Friends 💜

Championing Manchester fiction, and this one's mint! 🐝

Set in the vibrant, chaotic energy of Manchester's Curry Mile, this is an incredible story about friendship, family, masculinity, vulnerability, and so much more.

With all the camaraderie and real-life complexity of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting, but with a cultural anchor all its own, you're guaranteed to laugh out loud and ugly cry... Salam absolutely ATE with this one 🔥
