Our bookseller Athena read 'The Ten Year Affair', by Erin Somers - read her reccomendation below!

'This book kept me on my toes for the entire read! Cora and Sam have a seemingly electric chemistry from the moment they meet, rather than jumping into an affair they enmesh their domestic lives. They become family friends, a pod, each other’s support systems as they go about life in their suburban town. As domestic life continues, we get to see a dual timeline, offering a second narrative and perspective on the characters choices. I loved that you get to know these characters and their families over the course of a decade, as they navigate friendships, betrayal, a global pandemic and of course complicated marriages. I would recommend for readers who enjoy literary fiction and representations of home and family life.'

Dont miss our event with @angharadhampshirewriter where she will discuss her debut novel, The Mare in conversation with @louisesavidge .

Based on a true story, The Mare offers a gripping portrait of the descent of ordinary people into inhumanity.
Before the Second World War broke out, Hermine Braunsteiner was an ordinary young woman, a teenage housemaid from Vienna. By the time the war ended, she had transformed into one of the most notoriously cruel and violent guards in the Nazi concentration camps, the ‘Stamping Mare’ known for kicking prisoners to death.
In the aftermath of WWII, she disappeared back into civilian life, her crimes largely unknown and unpunished. Then she met a US war veteran, a bachelor holidaying alone in Austria. Ignorant of her past, he fell in love with her, married her and brought her back to America, where she lived for years as a well-liked suburban housewife. Until one day a tip-off from a Holocaust survivor sent a New York Times journalist to the couple’s door…

Natalie read 'Aftertaste' for her book club this year, and wants you to know why it stayed with her for weeks after...

What would you do to have a final meal with a lost loved one?
Aftertaste is a story about connection, grief and how different relationships shape our lives in a myriad of ways.
Konstantin has felt adrift since his fathers' sudden death when he was a child, and when he discovers he can communicate with the dead through recreating a special meal they enjoyed in their life, it gives him a determination to reconnect people that leads him into dangerous territory and onto a path he never could have predicted.
The descriptions of the meals are mouthwatering, and the love story is so touching without being saccharine at all; the way Konstantin declares his love was one of the most unconventionally romantic speeches I've ever read. I would highly recommend this book, and I can't wait to see what Daria Lavelle comes out with next!
